We're seeking a Paediatric Wheelchair Therapist (Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist) who is passionate about helping children build independence, confidence, and quality of life through mobility? This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference to children and their families.
As a Paediatric Wheelchair Therapist (Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist), you'll assess, design, and provide tailored wheelchair solutions for children with complex mobility, postural, and pressure management needs. Working across clinics, homes, schools, and community settings, you'll use your expertise to empower children to play, learn, explore, and thrive.
Youll be supported by experienced Band 6 Therapists, Rehabilitation Engineers, and our Band 7 Clinical Lead within the Swindon Wheelchair Service. Were seeking a clinician who brings not only skill, but also compassion, creativity, and a collaborative approach to delivering child-centred care that truly transforms lives.
This is a full-time role, working 37.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday.
Main duties of the job
As a Paediatric Wheelchair Therapist (Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist) you will assess and support children and young people who require manual or powered wheelchairs for long-term use, including specialist postural and seating needs. Managing a varied caseload, you will take a holistic approach that considers both the child and their family, ensuring tailored solutions that promote independence, comfort, and participation.
You will work across clinics, homes, schools, and community settings, collaborating with families, health professionals, and Rehabilitation Engineers to deliver personalised care and, where needed, custom seating solutions. Alongside clinical work, you will contribute to triaging referrals, managing equipment stock, and supporting repairs and recycling processes.
Communication is central to this role, whether offering sensitive support to families, coordinating with professionals, or providing training for staff, carers, and students. You will also maintain accurate records, uphold professional standards, and continue your own development.
The role involves some physical activity and travel across the community, as well as occasional challenging situations, but you will be fully supported by an experienced team. Most importantly, your work will make a lasting difference by helping children move with greater independence, confidence, and joy.

The Ideal Candidate
Essential
- Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy with HCPC registration
- Minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience in paediatrics (e.g. community, rehabilitation, neurology)
- Evidence of ongoing professional development and moving & handling training
- Ability to independently manage and prioritise a complex caseload
- Experience working as an autonomous practitioner and supervising students or junior staff
- Knowledge and practical experience of manual handling techniques and equipment
- Strong clinical reasoning skills to complete assessments, set SMART goals, and deliver tailored care plans
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with confidence working both independently and as part of a team
- Basic IT skills and accurate record-keeping
- Valid UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
- Self-motivated, well-organised, and able to prioritise workload under pressure
- Flexible and willing to work across other areas of the Trust when required
Desirable
- BAOT/MCSP member or other professional/specialist groups eg PMG
- Specialist post grad training course or masters modules relevant to this post.
- Experience of working with those with log-term neurological conditions or paediatrics
- Experience of carrying out posture and seating assessments
- Knowledge and experience of assessment and products for pressure care management
- Completed student educator recognised qualification and /or courses
- Teaching & presenting skills supported by evidence e.g: NVQ assessor
- Clinical audit skills
- Specialist clinical assessment skills in postural management and seating
