School Health Support Worker

Job summary

As a School health support worker youll be working closely with our friendly and dedicated School Nurses, following our policies and procedures, to help deliver theHealthy Child Programme (519). Together, well support schools, families, and children/young people, helping them to grow, learn, and thrive.

As part of Wiltshire Childrens Community Services, youll work both within our team and across partner organisations, building positive relationships and making a real difference in the community.

Your role will include:

  • Carrying out vision, hearing, and growth checks for children starting school

  • Supporting theNational Child Measurement Programme

  • Delivering engaging health promotion activities and interventions for pupils in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

This is a role where your care, patience, and enthusiasm can have a lasting impact on childrens health and wellbeing.

Main duties of the job

In the role ofSchool health support worker, youll help support childrens health and wellbeing in schools across Wiltshire. Youll carry out growth, vision, and hearing screening for eligible pupils, following national and local guidance, and will be confident using LogMAR vision and audiology tests. Youll also contribute to the National Child Measurement Programme, working closely with schools to ensure smooth delivery.

Youll work independently in school settings, following School Health Nursing standards, while maintaining positive relationships with staff and encouraging participation in screening programmes. Youll manage your own workload, keep accurate records, maintain equipment, and submit data on time.

Alongside screening, youll deliver health promotion activities and small-group interventions, as directed by School Nurses, and support the wider School Nursing Team when needed. Youll use IT systems to record activity, communicate effectively with colleagues and partner agencies, and ensure resources are used efficiently.

Safeguarding will remain central to your work, and youll keep your knowledge up to date through training, meetings, and supervision. Youll also welcome student observers to the role, adapt to changing needs in the service, and play an active part in team discussions and quality improvement.

Were looking for someone with a friendly, approachable manner and a passion for supporting children and young people. Youll have good communication skills, be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, and be able to build positive relationships with colleagues across different services.

Ideally, youll holdNVQ Level 3(or equivalent), have aGCSE in English(or equivalent), and be confident using IT. If you havent yet completed theCare Certificate, youll be happy to do so within your first three months. Experience working with children or young peopleprofessionally or voluntarilyis essential.

Youll be organised, proactive, adaptable to changing needs, and committed to delivering high-quality work. A full driving licence and access to a car during working hours are required.

Youll have a good understanding of child development and hold a childcare qualification. Experience with screening checks like vision, hearing, height, and weight is valuable, as is familiarity with using clinical record systems such as SystmOne. Previous work within a school nursing service and confident presentation skills are also beneficial
