Assistant Practitioner - Learning Disabilities

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Practitioner with experience in working with people with a learning disability, to develop their skills in this area by joining our county-wide Learning Disability Service. You will work out of one of the Learning Disability Wiltshire bases in Chippenham, Warminster, Marlborough, or Salisbury. Due to the nature of this role applicants should have a valid driving licence and access to their own transport.

We are looking for an Assistant Practitioner who is keen to work with people with learning disabilities who have complex health needs, challenging behaviour and/or mental health needs.

We provide regular supervision and opportunities for continued professional development, and the post holder will be closely supported by an Advance Nurse Specialist within the team.

Due to the nature of this role a valid UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes is essential.

Main duties of the job

As an Assistant Practitioner - Learning Disabilitiesyou will be responsible for:

  • Work with individuals and groups of people with learning disabilities to facilitate access to mainstream health services. Through either direct support in complex cases or through highlighting reasonable adjustments.
  • The ability to work in a flexible manner, both proactively and reactively to situations that arise on a daily basis is essential.
  • To work with individuals who may be distressed and in crisis.
  • Develop increasing skill and confidence with a wide range of health, social and wellbeing needs
  • Setting priorities and working in community-based settings.
  • Understand the importance of maintaining personal boundaries whilst developing hope inspiring relationships.
  • To practice the principles and philosophy of individualised patient care in accordance with HCRG policy/procedures.
  • The post holder may be involved in difficult conversations so will be required to act in a sensitive way, showing empathy towards service users and their carers.
  • Demanding situations might occur, as some service users also present with challenging behaviour and / or mental health difficulties.

Essential:

  • Foundation degree or Level 4/5 NVQ in health and social care sciences or equivalent.

  • Experience of working directly with people with a learning disability.
  • Relevant experience of working in any health or social care setting or any related voluntary organisation.
  • Able to demonstrate some awareness of theories underpinning health and social care
  • Able to articulate a clear knowledge of policy and legislative frameworks within which learning disability services are delivered including a persons rights under the MHA, CPA and Mental Capacity Act.
  • Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the concept of confidentiality.
  • Experience of working with people with mental health needs.
  • Experience of working with people who display behaviours that challenge.

Desirable:

  • Positive Behaviour Support training
  • Mental Capacity Act training
