Job summary
Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) play a vital role in supporting nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality patient care in the hospital wards. Their responsibilities cover a wide range of duties, from direct patient care to maintaining a clean and safe environment.
Main duties of the job
- To assist the registered nurse in welcoming and orientating patients to the ward environment
- Undertake patient observations including pulse, temperature, respiration and blood pressure and record them clearly and accurately. To calculate a NEWS2 score and inform qualified staff of any abnormalities/ changes as per the calling criteria
- Provide quality hygiene care to the patients including bed making, showering, bathing, skincare and mouth care whilst maintaining patient dignity
- Help patients with their meal choices and nutrition by observing individual dietetic requirements and providing direct support at mealtimes as necessary.
- Help patients with mobility, repositioning, and using mobility aids.
- Prepare and support patients before procedures or investigations
- Escort patients to other departments or facilities as required
