Main duties of the job

  • Communicate appropriately with patients, their carers and relatives and other visitors to the unit.
  • Communicate appropriately with all staff, liaise with other departments and agencies and attend internal meetings as appropriate.
  • Ensure the hospices policies relating to the security, control and administration of drugs are adhered to in line with NMC guidance.
  • At the request of a senior nurse and under their guidance co-ordinate in-patient activity and communications for the duration of a shift as appropriate.
  • Participate in the supervision and appraisal from an identified senior nurse.
  • Under the direction of a senior nurse participate in the induction of new staff, both paid and unpaid as requested.
  • With appropriate guidance contribute to the role development of unqualified staff within the clinical team.
  • Report and record any complaints from patients, visitors and staff reporting them to the nurse in charge.
  • Attend statutory training as requested and be responsible for own professional development in line with MNC requirements.
  • Work in other areas of patient care as required, subject to the needs of the service.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all aspects of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and all Dove House Hospice policies and procedures.

Job responsibilities

  • Demonstrate leadership and act as a role model to junior or less experienced members of the team.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence and expertise in palliative care and end of life care nursing, displaying a sound understanding of symptom management.
  • Under the leadership of the Senior Nursing Staff, be responsible for overseeing the nursing care of an identified group of patients.
  • Be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, documenting all relevant information accurately and legibly.
  • Ensure that a patients holistic needs are met in a person centred way.

We believe this role is equivalent to an NHS Band 5 role. While the hospice is not part of the NHS and so does not directly match NHS rates, we are competitive to the trust and offer the following salary scale.

Your salary would start on scale 5a (on the appropriate point) and then on successful completion of your probation period, you would be promoted to a Senior Staff Nurse on scale 5b (on the appropriate point)

Salary enhancements:

Bank Holiday Pay x 0.6 of the hourly rate

Saturday Enhancement x 0.3 of the hourly rate

Sunday Enhancement x 0.6 of the hourly rate

Unsocial Hours Enhancement (after 8pm) x 0.3 of the hourly rate

Nights Enhancement x 0.3 of the hourly rate.

Hours of work: 22.5 - 37.5 hours per week available. Please state preference when applying. Work Pattern: Depending on rotas your shift will be either: Early: 7.00 - 15.00, Late: 13.30 21.30, Night: 21.10 07.30

Overtime: There are times when it is necessary for you to work additional hours to those quoted in this statement within the limits set by the Working Time Regulations, and it is a condition of employment that you are willing to do so, when requested. Overtime hours are not guaranteed

Probationary period 1 Your appointment initially as a Staff Nurse would be subject to a probationary period of 9 months (this may be brought forward or extended up to 12 months)

This would allow the hospice to assess your overall work performance, conduct, attendance and suitability for the role of Senior Staff Nurse.

If successful at that stage, you would pass your probation for the role of Staff Nurse and be promoted to Senior Staff Nurse and move to the appropriate pay and occupational sick pay entitlement (1 month full & 1 month half pay). Probationary period 2 If your first probationary period was successful, your promotion to Senior Staff Nurse would include a new 6 month probation period (this may be brought forward or extended to up to 12 months)

Holiday entitlement: 7 weeks per annum including bank holidays. All holiday entitlements are pro-rata for part time workers.
