Job summary

We are looking to recruit a Speech and Language Therapist that is passionate about neuro-rehabilitation and supporting those with speech, language, communication and swallowing needs. Both full-time and part-time applications will be considered for this role.

The post-holder will work alongside the exisiting SLT team in a dynamic environment with a friendly multidisciplinary team, providing comprehensive assessment and high quality evidenced based therapy interventions to individuals who have transferred to Marbrook from acute hospitals and other rehabilitation settings. The clinical caseload is predominantly communication and dysphagia across the Stroke/ABI/TBI populations.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an SLT that has experience in assessing and providing therapy for communication and dysphagia in an adult neurological caseload. Those with less experience but a passion for neurological rehabilitation, evidenced by continuing professional development, are also encouraged to apply. Knowledge of a variety of adult speech, language, voice and CCD assessments (formal and informal) is essential, in addition to prior experience in carrying out both evidence-based and informal therapies. Experience in liaising with outside professionals, such as adult social care, is desirable. An interest in dysphagia and the ability to independently manage a dysphagia caseload is essential for this role.

As an SLT at Marbrook, you will have access to: Regular supervision from the Senior Speech & Language Therapist

A friendly multidisciplinary team consisting of OT, PT, Therapy Assistants, Clinical Psychology and nursing staff

Regular on-site GP visits, and clinics led by our Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine

A wide range of communication assessments and therapy resources, including iPads with app-based therapies installed

A therapy-led service, where you can provide therapy at the frequency you deem clinically appropriate

Multiple forms of therapy, including 1:1 therapy, group therapy and conversation partner training

Weekly in-service trainings to support CPD, alongside the ability to request additional trainings to further your individual portfolio

About us

The Marbrook Centre is a specialist inpatient neurorehabilitation unit in the St Neots area of Cambridgeshire. We have three units on-site Eden, Bray, and Mayfield each catering to a different clinical caseload. Eden, our rehabilitation floor, is a Level 2 inpatient neurorehabilitation unit supporting individuals with acquired neurological condition such as stroke, TBI, and spinal cord injuries. Residents are usually on-site for therapy for 6-12 weeks. The role advertised will work predominantly on the Eden floor, with the opportunity to provide dysphagia input to Bray and Mayfield.

Bray is our residential long-term nursing floor, where we support individuals with difficulties ranging including MS, MND, Huntingdons, and long-term stroke needs. Mayfield is our residential Dementia care floor, supporting those with a variety of Dementia subtypes.

Job responsibilities

Purpose of role:

This post holder will primarily be responsible for designing and delivering rehabilitation programmes and supporting and coaching staff to achieve the desired outcomes.

As this is primarily a clinical role, this post holder will have day to day contact and involvement with residents, their families and visiting professionals.

Overall Responsibilities:

Effectively manage a caseload of complex rehabilitation residents.

To complete comprehensive assessments of a patients communication, cognition and dysphagia and design appropriate therapy plans using the outcomes of these.

To take responsibility for ensuring therapeutic programmes are designed, delivered and evaluated appropriately.

To deliver high quality and person centred dynamic rehabilitation sessions.

Effectively utilise outcome measures to monitor effectiveness of therapy interventions.

Work closely with members of the MDT, residents, and their families to support with goal setting and discharge planning.

To play a leading role in rehabilitation review meetings.

Liaise with external agencies such as ICBs, social services, community teams, etc.

Engage in the keyworking programme and act as a key point of contact for residents and their family members.

To produce high quality written reports and rehabilitation documentation, including clinical notes.

To participate in the recruitment of the rehabilitation service staff team as required.

Contribute to regular clinics with the Consultant in Rehabilitation medicine.

Act as Clinical Educator for students on placement.

Provide clinical supervision to Therapy Assistants.

Provide clinical training and education to support workers.

Take a leading role in CPD and personal development through regular supervisions.

Play an active part during weekly MDT in-service training programme.

Contribute to service development projects and where suitable take a leading role in their creation and delivery.

Provide education to patients, families and staff on communication difficulties and dysphagia.

To liaise closely with all members of MDT to ensure both communication and swallowing guidance is understood and adhered to.

General Responsibilities:

To participate in audits as required.

To keep abreast of new developments in the profession, and to bring innovation and creative input to the role, for consideration and discussion with line manager.

To attend all mandatory and developmental training courses relevant to the post and as agreed with the line manager.

To work in accordance with all relevant legislation e.g. CQC standards, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty, Health & Safety at Work etc, and in line with The Marbrook Centres policies and procedures at all times, contributing (if and when appropriate) to the revision of these documents.

To take an active role in own personal and professional development.
