Main duties of the job

At Cygnet Healthcare, we have a strong occupational focus through support and direction from Clinical Leads and our Occupational Therapy Directors. We use evidence-based practice within each of our service lines, as defined by our clinical steering groups, of which Occupational Therapists play a key role. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will work as an autonomous clinician, providing specialist assessment and treatment of occupational dysfunction. You will lead the occupational therapy department, and be part of the senior management team. An integral part of this role will be supporting student education within the team. This role includes opportunities for learning, development and research, supported by a robust appraisal and supervision structure based on RCOTs Career Development Framework.

Summary of the site

Cygnet Bury Forestwood is one of three hospitals on the same site in Bury, Lancashire. It is a four ward hospital offering care and treatment to young people requiring inpatient care in either Psychiatric Intensive Care (PICU), Acute Mental Health or Secure Mental Health settings. The Occupational Therapy service is made up of a Head Occupational Therapist with a team of three OTs and three OT Assistants. The OT team work closely with MDT teams and ward teams to provide a defined treatment pathway from admission, through to intervention, and discharge. An opportunity has become available for the role of Head of Occupational Therapy.

Clinical: You would be responsible for the assessment and treatment of occupational dysfunction for 13 young people. The clinical role would be on our CAMHS PICU service. You will work w ith a full multidisciplinary team in a coordinated way to support each young person to develop their skills and move through our clinical model of care from admission to discharge.

Leadership: You would report to the Registered Manager of the hospital, and receive Clinical Supervision and guidance from our Regional Lead of Occupational Therapy for the Cygnet Greater Manchester Region. You would hold leadership and management responsibilities for the occupational therapy service of all four wards within the CAMHS Service. Each ward has their own occupational therapist and activity coordinator with OT assistants covering multiple wards. You will drive innovation and quality improvement further within the CAMHS occupational therapy service.

When a young person is admitted into our services, our main aim is to help them to stabilise and achieve discharge to the least restrictive environment as soon as possible. Our services support young people who are experiencing a variety of acute and complex mental health problems, in a welcoming and nurturing environment. Therapeutic support is provided by a diverse and specialist multi-disciplinary team.

Occupational Therapy Directorate

Under the leadership of our Occupational Therapy Directors we support over 160 Occupational Therapists. Working together as a large team we provide support to each other across the group, with the opportunity to be part of specialist interest groups & become involved in service development.

Every service line has a Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist to lead and develop evidence based practice and agreed occupational therapy pathway.

We ensure our occupational therapists have a voice through participating in service model development, utilising the expertise and support of our clinical lead occupational therapists.

In house training is offered as a comprehensive package of CPD opportunities and includes opportunities to train in sensory practices, VdT Model of Creative Ability and Model of Human Occupation assessment tools such as MOHOST.
