Job summary
To undertake the care and maintenance of a wide variety of medical devices, which may be complex in nature, and be either medical, scientific or laboratory equipment in all theatre areas at KCH under the technical direction of the Principal Theatre Technician. To train members of technical, nursing and medical staff on equipment usage, safety and storage. To accurately update databases which show training records and recertification dates. Provide technical support and advice to healthcare professionals and other staff in the provision of care, prior to and during procedures involving specialised medical devices within theatres and other clinical areas where necessary.
Main duties of the job
To assist in the management of medical, scientific and laboratory equipment within theatres working with the provider(s) of medical equipment maintenance. Undertake fault finding by the application of suitable techniques. Ascertain fault details from operators and where appropriate highlight deficiencies in operator training to your manager. Maintain accurate records of all equipment maintenance and location of equipment. To provide daily maintenance of all point of care testing (POCT) equipment. This should include both Internal Quality Control checks and External Quality Assessment participation as determined by Trust POCT committee. To calibrate equipment as per company policy, and perform daily quality control and performance checks as per documented procedures and record as required. Maintain equipment to a high standard, ensuring that it is prepared and ready for clinical use as per documentation standard operating procedures. Ensure all medical devices and instrumentation are effectively decontaminated as per Trust Health and Safety procedures and sent for service and repair in an appropriate time frame. Undertake regular checks of medical devices as listed in theatre procedures. Report any adverse or potentially adverse incidents via the InPhase system and advise clinical and management staff of any hazardous incidents or circumstances that could cause harm to staff or patients in the workplace. To keep professionally updated with regard to new equipment and techniques and to evaluate their effectiveness and appropriateness for Theatres. Liaise and collaborate with colleagues from all disciplines and services to support innovation and modernisation of medical equipment within own scope of practice. To assist the Principal Technician with the ordering and checking of all non-stock deliveries, ensuring there are adequate stock levels of all specialised consumables.
