WHAT DO YOU DO?

Advanced Clinical Practice:

• Act as theseniorscrub for a range of orthopaedic procedures, including joint replacements, arthroscopies, trauma, and spinal surgeries.

• Prepare and handle specialist instrumentation and equipment (e.g., power tools, implants, navigation systems) in line with manufacturers guidance and surgical protocols.

• Provide skilledassistanceto the surgical and anaesthetic teams,anticipatingneeds and adapting to changes during procedures.

Theatre Coordination and Leadership:

• Takeaseniorrole in preparing theatres, coordinating surgical lists, and ensuring all equipment, staff, and resources are in place.

• Support the Theatre Manager with team briefings, scheduling, stock control, and ensuring safe patient flow through the theatre suite.

• Supervise junior theatre practitioners, ODPs, and healthcare assistants, providing clinical guidance and oversight during shifts.

Safety, Standards, and Compliance:

• Champion the use of WHO Surgical Safety Checklists, infection prevention practices, and adherence to clinical governance requirements.

• Ensure safe decontamination and tracking of instruments, correct surgical counts, andaccuratedocumentation of procedures.

• Identifyand escalate clinical or operational risks andparticipatein audits and incident reviews.

Teaching, Mentorship and Professional Development:

• Mentor newly qualified practitioners, students, and team members, supporting skill development in orthopaedic scrub techniques and patient care.

• Provide in-service training on new procedures, implants, or theatre protocols asrequired.

• Maintain professional registration, competencies, and up-to-date clinical knowledge through CPD and reflective practice.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration:

• Liaise closely with consultants, anaesthetists, recovery staff, and ward teams to ensure continuity of care and an excellent patient experience.

• Contribute to theatre team meetings, QI projects, and service development initiatives to improve patient outcomes and theatre performance.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE?

Essential:

• Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC).

• Significant experiencein the perioperative setting with specialist knowledge in orthopaedic surgery.

• Proven ability to scrub for a wide range of orthopaedic procedures, including complex cases.

• Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.

• Strong understanding of clinical governance, infection control, and safety practices in theatre.

Desirable:

• Previousexperience in a senior role within theatres.

• Experience with robotic-assisted surgery or advanced orthopaedic navigation tools.

• Mentorship or teaching qualification.

• ILS/ALScertification.

• Familiarity with private healthcare processes, scheduling, and implant stock systems.
