Main duties of the job

The Payroll Team Leader will be responsible for completing payroll processes accurately and on schedule, managing data uploads, tax codes, student loans, and employee payroll records. They will also process BACS payments, reconcile payroll control accounts, monitor and validate payroll data, assist Home Administrators with payroll systems and queries, and administer employee benefits. Ensuring compliance with payroll legislation, policies, and government regulations is a key aspect of the role. The Payroll Team Leader will also support year-end payroll processing and lead a high-performing team, ensuring continuous improvement.

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Payroll Team Leader to oversee the accurate and timely processing and payment of Barchester Healthcare employees. In this role, you will lead and support a team of payroll officers, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and internal accounting standards. You will act as the key point of contact for payroll-related queries, providing guidance to both your team and wider stakeholders, and drive team performance, continuous improvement, while maintaining high standards across all payroll activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete payroll processes accurately and on schedule, including daily, weekly, and ad-hoc payroll runs

  • Manage data uploads, tax codes, student loans, and employee payroll records

  • Process BACS payments, including handling stops and rejects

  • Reconcile payroll control accounts, loans, and court order payments

  • Monitor and validate payroll data for new starters and employee transfers

  • Assist Home Administrators with payroll systems and queries

  • Administer employee benefits including expenses systems and company cars

  • Ensure compliance with payroll legislation, policies, and government regulations

  • Support year-end payroll processing alongside the Payroll Manager

  • Lead and support a high-performing team while ensuring cover and continuous improvement

Essential Experience

  • Level 4/5 CIPP Foundation Degree in Payroll Management (or equivalent)

  • Proven experience in payroll processing, ideally with some leadership experience

  • Strong knowledge of statutory payroll requirements and compliance

  • Excellent numeracy skills and high attention to detail

  • Experience producing payroll reports

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
