Job summary

MindSenseAbility (MSA) is a specialist therapeutic educational service based in the New Forest for young people (aged up to 25 years) with Autism Spectrum Disorders and associated conditions. We provide bespoke therapeutic & educational programmes delivered in a variety of environments through an integrated therapy, education and mental health team. We work across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Specialist CAMHS/Paediatric Occupational Therapist (full time)

to join our service and occupational therapy (OT) team, providing OT assessment and therapy. The post holder will work in our therapy and education centre, in the community, homes and schools. Close work with families and our multi-disciplinary team is an essential part of the role.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be an occupational therapist (OT) with experience working with young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and associated conditions and with Child and Adolescent Mental Health experience. You will have a minimum of two years experience as a CAMHs/paediatric OT, together with postgraduate training in Ayres Sensory Integration (OT-ASI), consideration and support will be given to those who are in the process of gaining Practitioner level training. Experience of working with young people with trauma and attachment difficulties would be desirable.

The role will include undertaking occupational therapy assessments and reports, being a part of the MSA initial assessment process, contributing to the MSA teams formulation, identifying participation difficulties, and delivering evidence-based occupational therapy intervention, including ASI therapy (in a therapy space that meets ASI fidelity requirements).

This post provides excellent opportunities to work in an innovative developing service with education, outreach, speech & language therapy, psychiatry, and clinical psychology team members working together around the young person and their family to meet their therapy and learning goals.

About us

Good communication with members of the multi-disciplinary team is essential and you must be registered with the HCPC. You are able to work without direct supervision, with regular clinical supervision and have access to a car - as the post requires you to undertake community and school visits. The candidate will enjoy the support of other committed professionals working to address the needs of young people, who at times find education a challenge. Our service is highly committed to child and family centred care. This is a full time (37.5 hours/week) post pro rata term time only.

Training and mentoring is available to develop staff skills as identified in job appraisals, to work with children, adolescents, and young adults with identified participation difficulties in everyday life, particularly due to underlying sensory processing & and integration difficulties associated with their diagnosis; and may include trauma, attachment, mental health difficulties.

Job Purpose: The occupational therapy team members deliver a range of assessments and therapy to children and young adults, as an integral part of the occupational therapy programme, including Ayres Sensory Integration therapy and sensory-based OT. The occupational therapists work closely with the MDT team, to meet the identified needs of the young people referred, particularly their occupation needs (activities of daily living, leisure and work/education deficits).

Key Responsibilities:

1. Deliver a range of high quality, specialist evidence based occupational therapy assessment, set goals, consider and monitor outcomes and deliver individualized interventions for each young person in your care.

2. Provide Occupational Therapy using a sensory integration framework , including sensory integration assessments, evaluations and intervention.

3. Identify objectives and provide occupational therapy that meets the long term objectives and short term therapy goals, as part of MSAs MDT Therapeutic Education & Learning Plans.

4. Work within our therapy team, and in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams within local services and charities.

5. Liaise with medical specialists, teachers, parents and other care professionals to enable young people and adults, including parents, to engage with, and participate in, everyday life.

6. Participate in local and national research, as agreed by MSA directors.

7. Undertake and deliver training as required, for families, education staff and wider professional teams, as required.

8. Develop occupational therapy and MSA resources, as agreed with MSA.

9. Follow the MSA policies regarding record keeping and confidentiality online; to be able to upload and maintain online recordkeeping and therapy notes.

The successful HCPC registered Specialist Occupational Therapist will:

a. Have recent experience of delivering occupational therapy assessment and treatment to young people with autistic spectrum disorders, ADHD, trauma, attachment and mental health conditions and other developmental disorders.

b. Have experience of delivering occupational therapy assessments, creating and implementing high quality, individualized sensory integration intervention and related approaches, including school support and strategies for use at home, and within community settings.

c. Possess or be willing to train for a postgraduate certificate in Ayres Sensory Integration Therapy (achieved or in progress equivalent to ICEASI Practitioner - Certificate in Ayres Sensory Integration) and able to administer the EASI and other sensory integration assessment tools.

d. Be willing to embrace innovation, be involved in research, and in the delivery of innovative service delivery within the local area.

e. Be able to create goals, identify outcome measures, and evaluate intervention, communicating these clearly with the teams around our clients.

f. Have experience working in collaboration with others, including multi-disciplinary team work; with parents as partners in the therapy process, creating and clearly communicating therapeutic plans, working on plans and sharing skills with education and other health and social care providers.

g. Have an understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.

h. Possess a full and valid UK drivers license or equivalent (Essential requirement throughout period of employment).
