Job summary

Claremont Private Hospital are looking for a permanent Orthopaedic Scrub Practitioner to join the team working 37.5 hours per week. Please note applications for part-time working may also be considered.

Main duties of the job

To assist in the assessment and implementation of patient care needs within the Operating department and ensure all patients are treated in a professional manner and that confidentiality is adhered to. As a multi-skilled practitioner, you will be required to scrub for some procedures, to support the anaesthetist and to recover patients safely.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To participate as a scrubbed and circulating member of the Theatre team during surgical procedures and carry out the necessary safety checks as laid down by Claremont Hospital Policy and Procedure and the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • To assist in the preparation of, clearing and cleaning of the theatres in accordance with the daily operating lists.
  • To participate in on-call duties to provide the hospital with 24 hour cover.
  • Provide surgical assistance to surgeons when required.

To assist the anaesthetists and surgeons as required, including assistance with transfusions and intravascular procedures.

  • To assist with the movement of patients within the Operating department.

To position the patient on the table for all procedures.

To maintain anaesthetic intubation and resuscitation equipment to a high standard following Hospital guidelines.

  • Conduct mandatory patient checks including informed consent, patients identity and operative site against the supporting documentation, prior to the start of the procedure
  • Complete mandatory surgical checks prior to the start of the procedure, during and pre wound closure
  • Monitor the patients condition throughout the procedure, taking appropriate action to manage any arising complications through contingency planning.
  • Communicate appropriately with others involved in the care of the patient
  • Ensure any accidents or complaints are fully documented and that the appropriate senior manager is informed, where appropriate commence the investigation.
  • Actively contribute to changes in practice and policies when changes have arisen which may follow an audit, complaint or newly issued guidance.

To maintain working stock levels of anaesthetic drugs and lotions in conjunction with the Pharmacist.

To maintain stock levels of anaesthetic consumables through liaison with the stores department.

Order stock/non stock items of equipment as required.

To complete patient charge sheets.

To report any problems with machines or drugs that may occur within the department.

Ensure defective equipment is replaced/sent for repair.

Any other appropriate duties that may be assigned.

LIAISON & COMMUNICATION

  • To ensure the communication of relevant information to appropriate persons.
  • To promote and maintain good interpersonal relationships with all members of the Theatre team and with other departments within the hospital.
  • To assist with the instruction of new staff and demonstration of procedures and policies.

LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT

  • To attend in-service training programmes.
  • To keep abreast of new developments within the Operating department to maintain professional awareness.
  • To teach Theatre nursing skills to new and junior members of staff where appropriate.
  • To discuss and promote innovative procedures involving patient care.
