Job summary

To support the Hospital in providing an efficient pathology laboratory service that meets the needs of service users; whilst conforming to all relevant quality standards and best practice requirements.

Main duties of the job

. Scheduling patient appointments, for specimen collection.

To receive patients and take blood samples by venepuncture.

Use of IT systems to process data.

Dealing with telephone requests.

Label, sort and book in blood and tissue samples for laboratory investigations.

To perform, under supervision, basic laboratory procedures.

Monitor and maintain stocks of specimen collection consumable items.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Scheduling patient appointments, for specimen collection.

To receive patients and take blood samples by venepuncture.

Use of IT systems to process data.

Dealing with telephone requests.

Label, sort and book in blood and tissue samples for laboratory investigations.

To perform, under supervision, basic laboratory procedures.

Monitor and maintain stocks of specimen collection consumable items.

Receipt and recording of delivery of reagents and consumables to the pathology laboratory.

Secondary preparation of specimens for transportation to referral laboratories.

Arrange transportation of urgent specimens for special investigations.

Distribute and log POCT EQA samples and input results to external services as appropriate

Raise orders for blood components in preparation for surgery

Maintain high standards of conduct and discipline.

Participate in relevant meetings, training and competence assessment to ensure compliance with hospital and departmental requirements.

Adhere to the structured systems of working within the pathology department as documented within departmental standard operating procedures.

Assist in the preparation and provision of management information.

Maintain the working & patient environment in terms of infection control

. Maintain Health and Safety requirements under current regulations
