The Role:
As the Senior SACT Nurse, you are responsible for delivering chemotherapy nursing services to patients within the unit and to deputise for the line manager where required. This is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact and develop your career.

Main duties of the job
What You'll Do:
- Provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis and through all stages of treatment
- Ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence-based nursing care for patients undergoing chemotherapy, assessing health, health related and nursing needs of patients, their families and other carers by identifying and initiating appropriate steps for effective care. This will include: -
- Managing a patient caseload
- Close liaison with medical consultants
- Ordering diagnostic tests within agreed parameters
- Running nurse-led clinics
- Work autonomously whilst providing clinical leadership, ensuring all patients have an accurate plan of care, which reflects the assessment undertaken and incorporates the issues and recommendations made ensuring clear documentation in the patients records
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in intravenous access, the management of central venous catheters, venepuncture, and chemotherapy delivery, including the management of anaphylaxis and extravasation
Qualifications and Knowledge:
- NMC Registered Nurse
- UKONS SACT Passport or to be completed within three months of appointment
- For this role you will need to be fully trained and qualified in venepuncture and cannulations and have experience of working with different types of central venous access devices
- UKONs trained and experience in oncology telephone triage. Recognition and management of neutropenic sepsis

Practice advanced life support to facilitate rapid stabilisation and the appropriate ongoing management of patients who develop acute treatment complications
Rotate into the 24-hour on call team to provide out of hours support and triage to
patients
Deliver a seamless service through the development of enhanced communication with
key stakeholders and patient care contributors
Assist in the development and audit of assessment tools that will ensure an appropriate
level of nursing intervention so that patients who present with the most complex needs
are referred to the appropriated specialist including patients and families who require
more in-depth support and counselling
Participate in the identification and development of clinical protocols and strategies to
enhance both the continuity and standard of specialist care
Ensure all care is given in accordance with agreed protocols
Work in line with and contribute to local delivery of national care standards
Work alongside radiographers and outpatient staff to ensure holistic care is
maintained throughout the GenesisCare centre and rotate to support other
departments where required
Ensure all patients are fully informed of the risks and benefits of proposed procedures/
treatments, contributing to the process of securing informed consent
Produce and provide all patients with relevant and accessible written information
regarding their treatment
Supervise and participate in the delivery of programmes of education and training per
the identified needs of clients, carers and other involved in their care
Work with junior staff to identify knowledge gaps in relation to chemotherapy patients
and ensure staff are appropriately educated
Lead on the specific areas of development of nursing practice within the team
To provide expert knowledge and advice in own specialist area, ensuring maintenance
of clinical excellence underpinned by evidence-based practice.
Participate in clinical audit within the chemotherapy service, raising the profile and
enhancing the contribution of nursing to patient care and informing business and
service development plans
Initiate and lead on research projects within the department
Utilise up to date research/evidence to deliver patient care and to disseminate this
knowledge to all members of the multi-professional team
Be aware of current research trials being conducted within own specialist area and to
be able to inform patients about these
Promote nursing research and evidenced based practice
Fulfil the role of mentor, providing peer support to staff working within the
chemotherapy service
Take responsibility for competency assessment or members of staff providing
mentorship to
Participate in the management of change to improve standards and communication
