Southampton Primary Care Ltd is delivering access to primary care services 08:00 22:00, 7 days a week. As part of this service, we are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Spirometry Nurse to join the team. We are a friendly, high achieving team whose services are always growing and improving on the forefront of primary care developments nationally.

Main duties of the job

To provide Spirometry clinics to Southampton Patients including reversibility and Feno and report results back to patients own GP.

Provides and receives highly complex, sensitive or contentious information and frequently deals with situations which are hostile or emotive.Uses developed communication, negotiation, conflict management skills which require empathy, reassurance and persuasive skills where there can be significant barriers to acceptance which need to be overcome. Regularly communicates service related information to Partners, Business Manager, Salaried GPs, Nursing, Paramedic and Administrative staff, patients, relatives and carers. Makes operational judgements, manages conflicting views and reconciles inter and intra professional differences of opinion. Builds and communicates therapeutic working relationships with a wide array of statutory and voluntary organisations for the benefit of patient care and facilitates good working relationships. Develops and delivers presentations to large groups eg local and national conferences, clinical meetings, empowers staff to develop presentation skills in order to promote good practice.

The post holder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for his/her own personal development by ensuring that continuous professional development remains a priority. The post holder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role. As such they will:

Participate in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development

Participate in continuing professional development opportunities to ensure that up-to-date evidence-based knowledge and competence in all aspects of the role is maintained

  • Using appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards, reporting of any potential risks identified, including:

1. hand washing

2. universal hygiene procedures

3. collection and handling of laboratory specimens

4. segregation and disposal of waste materials

5. decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment

6. reporting and treatment of sharps injuries

7. dealing with blood and body fluid spillages

8. Assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures

  • Understanding and applying the principles of the cold chain
  • Ensuring safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs within area of responsibility
  • Knowing the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate
