Job summary

The GP Care Group seeks an experienced and motivated Deputy Medical Director to provide expert clinical leadership and governance across our Integrated Urgent Primary Care services, including the Urgent Treatment Centre, Out of Hours and Same Day Access Hub.

This role attracts a market premia payment of £10,000 per annum and is subject to review every 2 years.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on urgent care services by ensuring high standards of patient care, clinical safety, and operational efficiency. The role requires a dynamic leader who will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams, service managers, and external stakeholders to improve service delivery and promote best practices.

The Deputy Medical Director will be expected to work on site at least 3 days in UTC and available for meetings with partners/stakeholders.

We're Looking For

Essential Criteria:

Full GMC registration with a License to Practice.
Inclusion in the National Medical Performers List.
Experience working in an urgent or acute primary care setting.
Strong knowledge of clinical governance, NHS policies, and urgent care pathways.
Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Desirable Criteria:

MRCGP, MRCP, or other postgraduate medical qualifications.
Experience in clinical leadership roles within urgent or emergency care.
Knowledge of the NEL and Tower Hamlets Urgent Care Strategy.

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Governance:

Provide clinical care that adheres to the recognised protocols and procedures indicative of excellence in general practice

Ensure a good working culture is developed in all services, making them a great place to work, where issues with staff are dealt with promptly and appropriately.

Provide safe and efficient medical care in accordance with both the nationally and locally agreed standards and principles for the Urgent Treatment Centre, OOH and Hubs.

Respond appropriately to the medical problems and concerns reported by patients or their carers.

Ensure the administrative team are made aware of any cases that need to be highlighted to the registered GP surgery the following working day e.g. an urgent review required.

Promote and maintain a culture of continuous improvement, patient safety, and clinical excellence.

Lead on clinical governance, incident investigations, and quality improvement initiatives.

Work collaboratively with the Quality & Governance teams to ensure compliance with CQC and NHS standards.

Operational & Service Development:

Support the operational management team in ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of high quality medical services, aligning with clinical governance, patient safety, and organizational objectives.

Develop and implement clinical pathways to improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital admissions.

Provide clinical expertise in the development of new models of care and service innovations.

Monitor and analyse key performance indicators (KPIs) and implement strategies for service improvement.

Embedding and developing of relevant SOPs for the GPs, e.g. including the GP Prioritisation Lead role.

Lead on clinical audit programmes in conjunction with the joint clinical lead, and other governance programmes to ensure that high quality services are delivered for patients.

Adhere to and support the electronic coding of the clinical record and thereby aid audit and data collection.

Support in future business developments and tender submissions and help the GPCG to acquire new businesses which are clinically safe and effective.

Staff Development & Support:

Enable the recruitment and induction of clinical staff into the UTC and other related services as necessary.

Ensure appropriate clinical support and escalation procedures are in place for staff working in UTC, OOH, and NHS 111.

Act as a mentor and provide clinical supervision to the medical staff.

Lead and participate in regular clinical audits, peer reviews, and training sessions. Support work colleagues and assist in the development of a coordinated and organised team and be able to provide pastoral support to the team.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication:

Work with all relevant stakeholders e.g. the UTC management, UTC ANPs, HUB Management and Clinicians, ED Management and Clinicians etc to identify risks and actions to mitigate these risks.

Liaise with allied and community services including London Ambulance, Accident and Emergency, Social Services Duty Team, 111, CHS community health services Mental Health Teams, Palliative Care Community Teams and Out of Hours Teams as necessary to support a good patient journey.

Participate in organisational meetings concerning service development, care pathways, clinical governance and audit.

Liaise with commissioners, NHS Trusts, primary care providers, and other stakeholders to ensure integrated service delivery.

Represent the service at local and regional meetings, influencing policy and service design.
