Job summary
We are looking for a Public Health Nurse to provide strategic leadership and expert public health nursing input across our organisation and community. This is a unique opportunity to shape preventative outreach programmes, strengthen community resilience, and support preparedness for communicable disease outbreaks.
Location: Bank Top Farm, Leeds (location not accessible by public transport driving licence and access to a vehicle essential; occasional travel to other sites is required)Contract: Fixed term 6 months (with potential to extend to 12 months); part-time 8 hours per week (1 day)Reports to: Associate Director of Quality
Main duties of the job
This role is about system leadership and collaboration rather than direct service delivery. You will be at the forefront of outbreak preparedness, public health campaigns, and community engagement, ensuring that prevention, early intervention, and health equity are embedded in everything we do.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in population health. You'll lead meaningful preventative initiatives, support communities during critical health challenges, and shape public health policy and practice across our organisation.

What Youll Be Doing
- Leading planning and coordination for communicable disease outbreak preparedness and response.
- Developing outbreak control plans with local authorities, health protection teams, and partners.
- Providing expert public health nursing advice during incidents and outbreaks.
- Designing and implementing preventative outreach programmes (e.g., vaccination promotion, infection prevention, lifestyle initiatives).
- Supporting community resilience through outreach and partnership with voluntary, community, and faith sectors.
- Contributing to local and regional public health policy development and strategy.
- Leading the nursing contribution to winter pressures and seasonal health challenges.
- Acting as senior advisor and professional lead for public health nursing within the organisation.
- Supporting workforce development and capacity-building for staff in public health and preventative roles.

- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (location not accessible by public transport; travel required).
- Significant senior-level experience in public health nursing, health protection, or population health.
- Strong understanding of communicable disease control, outbreak response, and epidemiology.
- Experience in policy development, preventative outreach, and system-level leadership.
- Familiarity with multi-agency working and emergency preparedness planning.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to translate evidence into policy and action.
- Excellent leadership, influencing, and partnership-building skills.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Skilled in risk assessment, priority setting, and programme planning.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, prevention, and improving population health outcomes.
Desirable:
- Postgraduate qualification in Public Health, Health Protection, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Location: This role will require working from our base office at Bank Top Support Centre, Black Hill Rd, Leeds LS21 1PY. Please note that there is no public transport to our head office where this role would be based, so own transport would be required.
