A unique opportunity to join our friendly department in Cambridge that delivers the complete range of adult cardiothoracic procedures using the very latest techniques and equipment.

A trainee Clinical Perfusion Scientists role is to qualify as an Accredited Clinical Perfusion Scientist. They achieve this by becoming competent in all aspects of adult cardiopulmonary bypass and associated techniques. Their job involves a range of activities; both clinical and non-clinical, that are complex and/or non-routine. They must be clinically supervised by an Accredited Clinical Perfusion Scientist (ACP) because their actions have a direct effect on the mortality and morbidity of patients. They will provide work as part of the team and be professional, efficient and effective in Clinical Perfusion at their training hospital. This is either Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Trust or James Cook University Hospital.

Our customer, Royal Papworth Hospital, is a world leader in Transplantation, VADs and E.C.M.O, and as a perfusion team, we have a unique involvement.

We work a 37.5-hour week, on a flexible rota. Cambridge Perfusion is the UKs largest private perfusion provider and this is an exciting opportunity for a graduate to train with the Cambridge Perfusion team, located at Royal Papworth Hospital.

As a trainee Perfusionist you will be supported in your clinical development by our experienced education team and you will have exposure to all routine cases in cardiothoracic surgery as well as transplant and major aortic work.

Clinical practice

Training and Development

  • Ensure all training opportunities are taken; developing the skills required of a Clinical Perfusionist
  • Maintain accurate Personal Development and Training Records
  • Use the student handbook to develop, and assess, knowledge with their mentor
  • Successfully complete academic work in a timely manner and request assistance where necessary
  • Fulfil the current eligibility requirements of the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists Accreditation pathway
  • Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with policies and practices of the LLP

Communication and working relationships

  • Communicate in an effective, clear and concise manner within the perfusion department but also within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Accurately and promptly relay sensitive information to other members of staff, the duty perfusionist and Trust ensuring appropriate patient care and efficiency.
  • Complete a quarterly progress review with their mentor.

Knowledge and training experience

  • Holds a current qualification that fulfils the entry requirements of the MSc in Perfusion Science

Analytical and judgement skills

  • Monitor a range of clinical information and act within procedural guidelines, under the strict supervision of an ACP
  • Develop adaptive skills that meet the individual needs of the patient; often in demanding clinical circumstances

Information and resources

  • Assist the departmental Systems Lead in maintaining the I.S.O. 9001:2015 Quality standards documentation.
  • Ensure that all information is handled according to the local Hospital Trust and the LLPs policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain the online College of Perfusion Training Electronic Log Book.
  • Accurately update the student progress board, with their mentor.
  • Complete their electronic time sheet with hours worked in a timely manner.

Financial and physical resources

  • Be responsible for careful use of all perfusion equipment
  • Ensure that equipment is safe to use and comply with local fault reporting procedures.
  • Work with other members of the team to maintain stock levels.
  • Obey relevant protocols and procedures when moving perfusion equipment to ensure own safety and that of others.
  • Complete all appropriate paperwork and computer data entry for work done.

Health and Safety

  • Have due regard for the personal safety of themselves and others with respect to current health and safety regulations.
  • Fulfil all mandatory training obligations as directed by the Trust and LLP
  • Make appropriate use of the available personal protective equipment
  • Disassemble and remove contaminated clinical waste from theatre and critical care areas safely and ensure all equipment is disinfected according to local protocols.
  • Safely transfer patients on specialist devices between clinical areas showing regard for patient and personal safety whilst under supervision of an ACP.
