Job summary

This is a temporary role for a recently qualified Occupational Therapist at Farmfield Hospital in Charlwood, Surrey. The successful candidate will work as part of a dedicated team providing specialist care for male patients who have been detained under the Mental Health Act. They will be responsible for planning and facilitating evidence-based group and individual programmes, maximizing independence and supporting safe resettlement into the community.

Main duties of the job

The Occupational Therapist will manage a caseload of complex clients using an evidence-based approach to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions. They will receive and respond promptly to new admissions, undertaking patient assessments and planning appropriate interventions. The OT will contribute to risk assessments, attend ward rounds and CPA meetings, and ensure accurate electronic records are maintained. They will develop close working relationships with the multi-disciplinary team and maintain effective communication with patients, relatives, carers and external professionals.

Working alongside a dedicated team you will be working at a service that provides specialist care that is specifically designed to support low and medium secure services for male patients who have been detained under the Mental Health Act.

You will be responsible for planning and facilitating evidence-based group and individual programmes, maximising independence and supporting safe re-settlement into the community where possible.

As an Occupational Therapist you will:

  • Manage a caseload of complex clients using an evidence-based approach to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.These will provide patients with the confidence, skills and coping strategies to function in everyday life.
  • Receive and respond promptly to new admissions, undertaking patient assessments to identify and prioritise patient needs before planning and delivering the appropriate and relevant interventions.The OT team follows MOHO (Model of Human Occupation).
  • Contribute to risk assessments, attend ward rounds and CPA meetings where you will feedback on patients’ engagement in Occupational Therapy.Ensure accurate and contemporaneous electronic records are maintained.
  • Develop close working relationships with professional and clinical colleagues within the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring clinical practice is in line with Elysium policies and procedures and complies with statutory regulations and quality standards.
  • Maintain effective communication links with patients, relatives, carers and external professionals throughout the patient’s rehabilitation journey.

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • A Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy 
  • A UK HCPC registration or applied for
  •  Previous experience of working in a mental health setting (this can be from practice placements).
  • Effective written/verbal communication skills
  • To be able to work as part of a team

You will be working at Farmfield Hospital, situated located next to Gatwick.

You’ll be caring for adult men 18+ who potentially have a forensic background and enduring mental health illnesses such as personality disorder, substance misuse issues and challenging behaviours.
