Job responsibilities
Are you an Occupational Therapist Technician looking for an opportunity to grow and develop? If so, join Aberbeeg Hospital, a low and medium-secure service for men with mental illness.
Under the supervision of Occupational Therapists, you will support the service in planning and delivering person centred therapeutic interventions, as well as group sessions. You will build rapport with service users to encourage participation in activities to promote and empower recovery.
As an Occupational Therapy Technician, you will also contribute to the assessment process, monitoring and evaluation of interventions in order to measure progress and service user goals.
This role involves:
- To undertake specific skilled occupational therapy technician work (e.g. carrying out assessments and drawing conclusions from these with support) to aid the mental health recovery of patients.
- To plan and implement interventions, using various Occupational Therapy skills, and to monitor progress and evaluate the outcome under supervision from the Occupational Therapist.
- To complete appropriate report writing for patient meetings and ward rounds, as well at times, presenting this feedback in MDT meetings.
- To provide feedback to the Occupational Therapist on the progress of the occupational therapy interventions.
- You will assist in the planning and delivery process of the provision of evidence-based activity sessions across both wards, a low and a medium secure ward.
- Support service users to achieve their goals and access appropriate services.
- To maintain adequate records and note-writing using patient record applications.
- To liaise with third sector agencies and community resources to support patients to access meaningful activities, recreational activities, using practical, communication and creative skills.
- Involvement in quality and service improvement projects.
Essential:
- GCSEs (A-C) or a relevant health and social care qualification.
- Experience in a mental health setting.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Highly motivated and flexible, to meet the needs of the service.
- A good level of IT skills and good documentation skills.
- Ability to undertake STMVA training.
Desirable:
- Experience working in an occupational therapy support capacity.
- An understanding of core Occupational Therapy theories, models, and practices, especially the MOHO model.
- Relevant Occupational Therapy support worker training/qualification.
- Flexibility with working patterns, open to working outside of Monday – Friday, 9-5 pm if required.

You will be working at Aberbeeg Hospital, a low and medium secure service for men which aims to make sure that each service user receives an individualised formulation of needs, to ensure that the care and treatment delivered is appropriate. Aberbeeg is located within the boundaries of the county borough of Blaenau Gwent, set in 11.5 acres of land with beautiful views of the Welsh countryside.
Aberbeeg uses a sixteen-week therapeutic planning model of care, meaning that service users have a therapeutic timetable devised collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team using meaningful and smart goals for a sixteen-week period. Following this, the timetable is reviewed and changed to reflect the development and achievements made.
