Job summary

This is a temporary role for a qualified Social Worker with at least 4 years of post-qualification experience to join Emerald Place, Charwood, Surrey as the Designated Safeguarding Lead. The role involves assessing the social care needs of young people with complex mental health and psychological needs, managing and supervising social work staff, and taking a lead in developing and managing the social work department.

Main duties of the job

The Social Worker and Designated Safeguarding Lead will be responsible for accessing the social care needs of young people, providing a quality social work service, and contributing towards the completion of service users' CPA documents. They will also be responsible for maintaining contact with young people's families, carers, and significant others, and promoting anti-discriminatory practice. Additionally, they will assist in the assessment of suitable after-care placements and maintain accurate and up-to-date records of their social work inputs to the care plan.

You will be responsible for accessing the social care needs of young people and be a principal provider of a quality social work service to assess those needs as outlined in patient care plans. This will involve working with young people who have complex mental health needs and psychological needs.

As an experienced Social Worker, you will bring your knowledge of social policy and expertise in social work practice ensuring and maintaining a quality social work service to service users and their families.

You will also be responsible for the management and supervision of social work staff and take a lead in developing and managing the social work department.

As a Designated Safeguarding Lead, you will be:

  • Contributing towards completion of service users CPA documents providing comprehensive assessment reports when required.
  • When it is part of an agreed care plan, to complete focussed work with individual young people using a range of interventions.
  • Maintaining contact with young people’s families, carers and/or significant others offering support, information and where relevant to the care plan joint family and patient sessions which are enabling.
  • Taking a leading role in promoting anti-discriminatory practice in a way that links the young person’s individual circumstances to the broader, social, political, legal and cultural context (with relevance to care plan).
  • In conjunction with the responsible Social Services Department or integrated NHS assist in the assessment of suitable after care placement working across professional boundaries.
  • Maintaining accurate and up to date records of their social work inputs to the care plan including Section 117 care planning and transfer summaries, which reflect the patient’s views.

To be successful in this role you will:

Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Elysium Healthcare have worked in partnership to provide a new purpose-built Tier 4 Children and Young People Mental Health Service (CYPMHS) in Surrey.  

Emerald Place Clinic is a 12-bed general adolescent inpatient unit for the care and treatment of young people aged 13 up to the age of 18. You will be part of a team who supports young people who have a primary diagnosis of mental illness including those with neurodevelopmental disorders, mild learning disability and autism and those with disordered eating.
