Job summary
This is a 12-month fixed-term contract for an experienced Nurse, Ward Manager or Head of Department to take on the role of Head of Clinical Services at The Dean Neurological Centre. You will provide strong, professional clinical leadership and drive best practice to ensure high standards of care and clinical governance.
Main duties of the job
As Head of Clinical Services, you will be responsible for providing clinical direction and strong, professional leadership to all clinical staff, including nursing, allied health professionals and medical staff. You will lead the clinical services to deliver a high level of clinical governance, safe and effective resident care, and identify and reduce clinical risk. You will also support the Service Director with business development and annual contracting, and assist with the strategic direction of the facility.

As an experienced Nurse from the NHS or private sector, you will provide strong, professionally accountable clinical leadership to The Dean Neurological Centre. You’ll drive best practice, ensure a robust clinical governance framework is consistently applied, and champion high standards in line with company policy and employment legislation.
In this pivotal role, you will work to improve the delivery of clinical quality monitoring outcomes, strengthen clinical systems, and help build a learning culture that supports continuous improvement across the service. Collaboration will be key as you work closely with colleagues, qualified staff and managers to enhance practice and patient experience.
As Head of Clinical Services, you will also provide clear clinical direction and strong operational management to support the business and workforce objectives of both The Dean and Elysium Healthcare. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will play a central role in shaping service performance and will deputise for the Service Director when required.
This role is offered as a 12month fixedterm contract.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Responsible for providing clinical direction and strong, professional leadership to all clinical staff including nursing, allied health professionals and medical staff either directly employed or working under service level agreements and in line with Elysium policy and national clinical guidance.
- Lead the clinical services to deliver a high level of clinical governance, safe and effective resident care and identify and reduce clinical risk. Using resident outcomes and utilising the audit of resident feedback, continually examine opportunities for clinical performance improvement, risk management and champion a culture of continuous quality improvement related to clinical activity.
- Support the Service Director with Business Development/annual contracting, with a focus on safe delivery of care.
- Assist with the strategic direction of the facility and form strong internal and external stakeholder links to successfully deliver the strategic aims.
- Fulfil the role of being the Infection Control ensuring compliance with Infection Control
- Policies and Procedures throughout the site. Ensure that IPC governance processes are followed through local Infection Prevention and Control Committee and representation at other appropriate meetings.
- Effectively review and manage clinical incidents and investigation (including PSIRF) in line with Elysium policy and delivery of a clinical service which meets the
- The regular and timely delivery of reports such as, and not limited to, the monthly governance report and any company wide reporting requirements.
- Responsible for the chairing of key meetings groups/committees and deputising as chair in the Directors absence e.g. Clinical Governance, Heads of Department etc.
- Act as the Safeguarding Lead (see attached description), Complaints Officer, and the Controlled Drugs Accountable Officer for the facility.
To be successful in this role you will need:
- Current registration with the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC)
- At least 2 years; experience in a supervisory capacity within a relevant care setting
- Knowledge of the legislation and standards of the CQC
- A strong desire for change and innovation with strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated sound financial management and administrative skills in a Health Care facility.
- Demonstrated understanding of private and public health sector funding models
- Proven ability to successfully lead and motivate a clinical services team providing strong strategic direction and positive leadership.
- Proven experience of working within a strong clinical governance environment.
- Proven experience working at a management level within the health care industry.
- Proven strategic planning, workforce analysis and policy development skills.

The Dean Neurological Centre has 60 beds in Gloucester (GL2 9EE), which is on the outskirts of the town within easy commute from Gloucester, Cheltenham with good transport links.
The Centre delivers specialist 24-hour nursing and therapy services for people with complex long-term neurological conditions who require ongoing support and assistance to maximise functional ability.
It specialises in slow stream rehabilitation where the emphasis is placed on maximising each individual's abilities, comfort and quality of life.
Bedrooms are fitted with high dependency equipment, including ceiling track hoists, wall mounted suction and oxygen equipment., with all rooms adapted to individual requirements. There are also well-equipped therapy facilities and other facilities such as gardens, gym and minibus.
