Main duties of the job

As the Senior Psychologist, you will work 37.5 hours a week, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and under the direction and supervision of the Joint Heads of Psychology. You will be responsible for providing psychological assessments, formulating treatment plans, implementing a range of psychological interventions, and developing and managing group work programmes. You will also play a key role in service developments, providing an evidence-based approach to new clinical initiatives.

What you will be doing

You will work 37.5 hours a week as the Senior Psychologist for a service that offers (Neuro-Forensic Acquired Brain Injury rehabilitation for adult males).

In collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and under the direction and supervision of the Joint Heads of Psychology, you will support the delivery of psychology services across St Mary’s Hospital. In the absence of the Joint Heads, you will act as the primary point of contact between the psychology department and the senior management team.

As the Senior Psychologist you will have active participation in multidisciplinary team work, ensuring that our service users are fully engaged in their care pathways. It also includes supporting clinical team efforts through both direct interventions and the facilitation of staff training programmes. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of new initiatives and ways of working within the service and working in partnership with both internal and external agencies to enhance treatment pathways for service users.

There is a strong emphasis on teamwork, supervision and CPD, with support from a regional network of Psychologists.

As a Senior Psychologist you will be:

  • Providing psychological assessments of patients based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological (and neuropsychological) tests, self-report measures, rating scales direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the patient’s care.
  • Formulating plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of acquired brain injury and forensic risk designed around the patient’s needs, and employing methods unpinned by relevant evidence-based practice and appropriate conceptual frameworks.
  • Implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals within and across teams.
  • Acting as psychologist for a ward and/or group of patients as directed by the Joint Heads of Psychology.
  • Developing and managing groupwork programmes and innovative therapeutic approaches and ensuring that appropriate outcome measures are in place.
  • Taking a key role in Psychology service developments, providing an evidence-based approach to new clinical initiatives.

To be successful as a Senior Psychologist, you'll have:

  • Successful completion of a Doctorate level qualifcation in applied psychology (clinical, forensic, counselling) either through the British Psychological Society or a recognised training body, enabling registration with the HCPC as as Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Experience (either pre-training, on training, or subsequently) of working with clients with complex needs that are relevant to the service population. This can include forensic, neuropsychological rehabilitation, learning difficulty, neurodiversity and complex trauma.
  • Competency in psychological assessment and formulation skills and an aptitude for learning new assessment methods including standardised cognitive assessment (WAIS, RBANS etc)
  • A well developed competency in structured risk assessment and management tools.
  • Experience in one or more therapeutic modalities (CBT, DBT, CAT, CFT, EMDR etc)
