Job summary

This is a great opportunity for an aspiring Forensic Psychologist to demonstrate competency in the core areas required to qualify as a Forensic Psychologist. The role involves working in a well-established male Secure Acquired Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service, which encompasses medium and low secure care, as well as level 2 rehabilitation and acute mental health care wards for service users.

Main duties of the job

As a Forensic Psychologist in Training, you will undertake psychological assessments and then write up using appropriate psychometric measures, attend relevant meetings to contribute to the planning and development of service improvements, manage and maintain databases, assist with audits and research projects, attend reflective practice sessions and work towards facilitating these for others, and support registered members of staff within the service on a day-to-day basis.

Job responsibilities

Are you an aspiring Forensic Psychologist who is looking for the next step in their Psychology career?  If so, join St Mary’s Hospital as a Forensic Psychologist in Training. This is a great opportunity for you to demonstrate competency in the core areas required to qualify as a Forensic Psychologist.

You will be working in a well-established male Secure Acquired Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service, which encompass medium and low secure care, as well as level 2 rehabilitation and acute mental health care wards for service users.

Working as a Forensic Psychologist in Training you will be supervised by a registered Psychologist and have your own case load, complete assessments, create collaborative formulations, and facilitate group and individual therapeutic sessions across the service. You will also be supporting and contributing to risk assessments, collection and analysis of data, and representing Psychology in multi-disciplinary clinical meetings. You will support in co-facilitating workshops and training delivered across the hospital. You will also be supported to maintain your personal and professional development and work towards your career development.

Within this role you will be able to build upon and develop skills in all areas relevant to Psychology; person-centred care, consultation, team working, assessment, formulation, therapy, risk assessments and management, service development, leadership and research.

We enjoy having a team in which we can draw on each other’s expertise and as such would support your personal and professional development. We have quarterly CPD days with the wider regional Psychology teams and have access to external training opportunities. Your ideas on how to contribute to this or grow it further would be warmly received.

The role is mainly based on site, although some remote/flexible working opportunities are available.   

As a Forensic Psychologist in Training, you will:

  • Undertake psychological assessments and then write up using appropriate psychometric measures (cognitive and neuropsychological), direct and indirect observations, and semi-structured interviews, under appropriate supervision.
  • Attend relevant meetings to contribute to the planning and development of service improvements.
  • Manage and maintaining databases.
  • Assist with audits and research projects where required.
  • Attend reflective practice sessions and work towards facilitating these for others.
  • Support registered members of staff within the service on a day-to-day basis.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • To have completed an undergraduate course providing eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the BPS (GBC) AND completed a BPS accredited Master in Forensic Psychology conferring to Stage 1 completion.
  • Previous experience within clinical and / or forensic settings.
  • An interest in working with acquired brain injury and patients with Neurobehavioural disability.
  • Clear professional goals for development and consideration on how to complete stage 2.
  • Ability to meet professional practice expectations and the regulatory body codes of ethics.

Location:  Floyd Drive, Warrington, Cheshire, WA2 8DB.

You will be working at St Mary’s Hospital, a service which offers a range of care settings for male patients with acquired brain injury and complex mental health difficulties. The hospital contains medium, low secure and rehabilitation wards, as well as an acute mental health service are all set within one site.
