Main duties of the job
An opportunityhas arisen for an experienced HCPC-registered Specialist Biomedical Scientistwithin our Histology department based at Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow. Our department operates from Monday to Friday, 8:45am to 5:15pm. We are looking for a candidate who have completed their IBMS specialist portfolio in Histopathology Department and can demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. The successful candidate is expected to provide Histology services including dissection, embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, special stains, Immunohistochemistry & able to perform quality checks.
You will be joining our energetic, highly motivated, dynamic & passionate team of 50 people. You are expected to be proactive, motivated and a team player with an excellent communication skills. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to progress in their careers.
We provide Cellular Pathology services toLondon North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (one of the largest integrated NHS Trusts in the country).
We are UKAS accredited and a recognized HCPC / IBMS training laboratory.

Overall Job Purpose:
Perform Histology techniques accurately, efficiently and according to Laboratory Standard
Operating Procedures, national guidelines and best practice.
As a specialist BMS you will be expected to work on rotation in all subdisciplines of histology,
supervise juniors staff and contributing to the provision of the Histology service at Northwick Park
Hospital.
Main Duties:
To include, but not be restricted to, the following duties:
1. Specimen reception, preparing cut up for pathologists and performing BMS transfer
2. Frozen sections
3. Processing samples and understanding the programs for rapid, overnight, weekend and
bank holiday processing
4. Microtomy for all different type of specimens and understanding the requirement for each
speciality
5. Special stains both manual and automated
6. Immunocytochemistry using the bond Leica machine
7. Liaise with Consultant Histopathologists, Hospital Staff and users of the Histology service.
8. Perform/ monitor quality control program as required under the direction of senior staff.
9. Assist in stock control.
10. Be aware of current advances and appraise help new techniques as required.
11. Have a good working knowledge of quality issues and adhere to company Quality
Management System.
12. Assign laboratory numbers and carry out clerical and technical tasks in accordance with
sample handling procedures.
13. Take an active part in training other members of staff as and when required
14. Take an active role in the referral of samples to third party laboratories.
15. Take an active role in the delivery of results including postal reports.
16. Adhere to revenue capture procedures for each patient request.17. Clean and maintain equipment to achieve the optimum instrument performance and
maintain a clean and safe working environment
18. Provide input to maintaining policies and procedures, review and update as required.
19. Comply with Health and Safety legislation and be aware of the responsibilities of the
