Job summary

Cellular Pathology Services Ltd are looking to appoint a proactive, innovative experienced Biomedical Scientist to lead the Immunohistochemistry (IHC) section of the laboratory. The post holder will be responsible for the day to day running of the section as well as assisting in the routine laboratory duties under the direction of the laboratory manager. This role would suit someone who has extensive Histopathology experience as well as extensive recent experience in IHC.

Educated to Masters / Fellowship level, or equivalent demonstratable experience in Cellular Pathology, holding an IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Science and the Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology, you will be highly skilled and self-motivating with the ability to assess and improve current working processes.

You must have experience of using and troubleshooting various IHC platforms and be able to validate and verify assay performance following strict protocols.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and people skills. You must have had experience of working to ISO 15189 and be able to train and supervise others.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the day to day running of the Immunohistochemistry (IHC) service

To lead and develop the IHC section within the laboratory

To train other staff in the IHC section

Recognition of IHC results and ability to troubleshoot

To validate and verify new and existing antibodies

To evaluate new emerging technologies related to IHC

Contributes to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department

Lead troubleshooting, service developments and implementation of new processes and techniques relating to IHC

Perform and review audits, be an active participate in Quality Management activities

Job description

Job responsibilities

Laboratory Testing

1) To lead and develop the service by having expert knowledge and experience in immunohistochemistry techniques

2) To troubleshoot IHC testing

3) To maintain the IHC equipment and report any issues as per current protocols

4) To perform all Histopathology technical procedures in use in the department to a high-quality standard.

5) To support the digital pathology workflow.

6) To support provision of the extended hours service to meet operational requirements as appropriate.

7) To advise the laboratory manager of any technical or operational problems as they arise and offer solutions.

8) To perform stock-take in the IHC area

People Management

1) Provide leadership, supervision and mentoring of staff as required.

2) To provide training to BMS and AP staff on all IHC related processes

3) Assist in organising training and competency assessment of staff ensuring compliance with company and professional body requirements.

4) Assist in designing and implementing training schedules, programmes and sessions to meet the requirements of the Company and the IBMS.

5) Assist in training and developing associate practitioners and placement students to obtain the registration portfolio.

Audit & Governance

1) Be involved in service quality improvements

2) Assist with the writing and review of procedures and methods

3) Complete audits in line with the audit schedule

4) Organise testing of NEQAS materials, review of results and action any EQA failures

5) Provide data analysis and reports to support the various company meetings as required

6) Participate in annual performance appraisal process

7) Act responsibly and act in the best interests of the company at all times

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

1) Participate in CPD activities.

2) Remain aware of scientific or other advances relevant to own role.

3) Develop and maintain skills and knowledge appropriate to the post by undertaking training, attending meetings and conferences

Health & Safety & Security

1) Understand and apply the site Safety, Environmental Policy, Safety Management System and relevant legal safety & Environmental requirements.

2) All staff must be familiar with the safety, environmental rules and procedures applying to their job and take reasonable care for their own safety and that of other people.
