Job summary

A vacancy has arisen for a Fixed Term Maternity Cover Biomedical Scientist (BMS) in our Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department based at the North Middlesex University Hospital.North Middlesex University Hospital is one of Londons busiest acute hospitals, serving more than 350,000 people living in Enfield and Haringey and the surrounding areas, including Barnet and Waltham Forest.

The post holder will be an experienced Biomedical Scientist who works as part of a team undertaking both urgent and routine Haematology and Blood transfusion testing in order to provide safe and reliable results. The post holder will also carry out day to day tasks in accordance with UKAS 15189 and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and local standard operating procedures. Work will be undertaken with much autonomy but under the overall responsibility of the Head of Haematology and the Head of Blood Transfusion. Knowledge of Quality Management Systems such as Q-Pulse as a tool for incident and change management is essential for this role.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve performing appropriate haematological and blood transfusion investigations, providing a cross-site, 24/7 service. The post holder will be experienced in a laboratory setting who works as part of a team to ensure urgent and routine Haematology and Blood Transfusion testing, pre-transfusion testing, other specialist investigations are carried out in a timely manner. This is essential in to provide reliable results to the clinical teams and to provide safe, compatible blood components and products for patients who require transfusion or for antenatal monitoring.

Participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, whilst adhering to standard operating procedures and participating in their regular review and update. 2. Multidisciplinary working as required 3. Techniques and testing that include but not limited to: Testing and authorising of; Full Blood Counts, Blood film morphology, Malaria testing, Glandular Fever testing, Glycated haemoglobins, Hb Electrophoresis, ESR, Group and Screen, Grouping and antibody Investigation, Blood product compatibility testing. 4. Communicate patients results and answer enquiries from health care professionals providing information regarding appropriate investigations required and explanation of results, within departmental guidelines and professional code of conduct. 5. Interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens for appropriate tests, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary. 6. Undertake specimen preparation and analysis for a range of sample types. 7. Operate and maintain analytical equipment in the department. 8. Evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures. 9. Interpret complex scientific data and enter test results on pathology computer system. 10. Check reports for further action by clinical staff. 11. Authorise reports as delegated within departmental policy. 12. Replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and inform the Section Leader if back-up stocks are low. 13. To assist when required in the preparation of documentation for UKAS (ISO) accreditation. 14. Able to solve complex problems within work area, but advise both clinicians and senior staff of any clinical and managerial issues
