Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic, well-motivated, organised BMS with appropriate qualifications and/or relevant experience to join the senior team of the Blood Sciences department as a Senior BMS Quality Manager.Within the Department of Biochemistry, which includes both Automation and Specialist sections, the post holder will be responsible for the design and implementation of the laboratorys Quality Management System. They as a Quality Manager will manage the system with the aim that the laboratory becomes progressively more effective in quality terms and meets both regulatory and accreditation requirement. The post holder will have the skills and ability to promote quality within all areas of the laboratory. Modern methods of quality management and of quality process control are central to effective Pathology services. They are also vital to the clinical governance and risk management within those services.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate should hold a current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). They should have either a specialist diploma in Clinical Biochemistry or an MSc in a relevant subject and at least 3 years experience in a Chemistry laboratory as an established BMS.

Overall Job Purpose:
Within the Department of Biochemistry, the post holder will be responsible for the design and
implementation of the Laboratorys Quality Management system. He/she as a quality manager will manage
the system with the aim that the laboratory becomes progressively more effective in quality terms and
meets both regulatory and accreditation requirement. The Quality manager will have the skills and ability
to promote quality within all areas of the laboratory. Modern methods of quality management and of quality
process control are central to effective Pathology services. They are also vital to the clinical governance
and risk management within those services.
To manage staff and various sections as directed by the Operational Lead or Deputy, working in
collaboration with the other senior scientific staff in providing an efficient and effective service within the
resources available and to ensure the maintenance of scientific standards of HSL.
The post holder will be required to work within any section of the department including core and unsocial
hours as required.
Quality management:
1. To participate in local management meetings, decision making and policy implementation
2. To become familiar with the area of work for which he/she is quality manager; relevant statutory
requirements, the clinical governance, risk management and quality audit policies and
procedures of HSL and the system(s) of accreditation in use.
3. To educate and train the Laboratorys staff in quality principles and practice.
4. To operate a system for document control
5. To investigate result and service complaints and incidents and ensure that effective and
immediate follow up actions are taken.
6. To follow up on external inspections and verify the completion of corrective action as required by
the reports of inspectors.
7. To provide help and advice to functional managers on quality management matters.
8. To identify areas and particular projects where there is the potential for improvement of quality to
the benefit of the service provided by the laboratory.
9. To provide information periodically for management quality review.
10. Other tasks that arise from time to time relevant to delivering the objectives to the Immunology
Quality Manager.
Other duties
To include, but not be restricted to:
1. To supervise various grades of scientific & support staff. 2. To participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, whilst adhering to standard operating
procedures and participating in their regular review and update.
3. To participate in multidisciplinary working as required.
4. To perform an array of laboratory techniques and testing.
5. To communicate patients results and answer enquiries from health care professionals within the
hospital and in the community, providing information regarding appropriate investigations
required and explanation of results, within departmental guidelines and professional code of
conduct, recognising own boundaries.
6. To interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens for
appropriate tests, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary.
7. Undertake specimen preparation and analysis for a range of sample types.
8. To participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within the
department.
9. Supervise and appraise all relevant levels of staff within the department.
10. To operate and maintain analytical equipment in the department.
11. To evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using
appropriate quality control procedures.
12. To interpret complex scientific data and enter test results on pathology computer system
13. To check reports for further action by the Clinicians, and to authorise reports as delegated within
HSL departmental policy.
14. To ensure an effective and high quality service to both the public and independent sector assisting
in appropriate supervision of all activities such that service, operational and contractual KPIs are
met.
15. To maintain professional and technical standards within the service at all times. This will include
assisting in recruitment and management of appropriately qualified staff, safety systems, laboratory
policies, quality assurance and analytical services.
16. To assist in the evaluation of new equipment and advise the head of service, senior scientific
colleagues on the need for new equipment and maintenance of existing equipment.
17. To ensure that the department meets all the standards required by UKAS and to participate in the
regular review of all the procedures performed in the laboratory including the establishment and
monitoring of effective internal and external Quality Control and Quality Assurance schemes.
Training And Education
1. To train new laboratory and clinical staff, this involves explaining and teaching complex
technical/analytical procedures and motivating staff by promoting healthcare sciences in an
interesting and positive manner.
2. To acquire an up-to-date knowledge of developments in discipline and pathology in general as
reflected by CPD.
