We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed advanced Biomedical Scientist. This role will be working closely with the Head of Blood Transfusion in managing a skilled team of senior and advanced Biomedical scientists and support staff with responsibility for providing a comprehensive, high quality 24/7 Blood Transfusion service for University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH).

Our laboratory processes on average 85,000 group and screens per annum, and as a tertiary referral centre, you as part of your role will support the transfusion service to UCLH. This service is not limited to routine transfusion service provision, but captures the following areas- haemoglobinopathy services. TTP referral , Haematology -oncology , and foetal medicine- some of these services are the largest of it type in the U.K

Main duties of the job

This role is suited to a scientist who wants to develop their knowledge and hands on experience of complex transfusion science, in combination with the logistics of delivering services to a large group of hospitals. We operate an extensive network of remote issue fridges across the hospital footprints.

To meet the operational demands of the lab, you will need excellent interpersonal skills, be highly organised and able to delegate in order to keep operations running efficiently and effectively. There is significant amount of floor management in this role.

We are a team who are passionate about patient safety and quality. HSL 60 WSL is a licensed blood establishment, and a good working knowledge of GMP principles as the apply to blood transfusion services is important.

Job responsibilities

An experienced Biomedical Scientist to assist the Head of Blood Transfusion in managing a team of staff in the department with responsibility for providing a comprehensive, high quality 24/7 Blood Transfusion service to all HSL clients, in particular for UCLH as it holds Blood Establishment Authorisation.

As a Blood Establishment, the department provides its own irradiated blood products. The correct maintenance of the blood irradiator (in terms of both policies and procedures and physical maintenance) to satisfy the requirements of MHRA and other regulatory bodies is a crucial part of laboratory operations for which this post is responsible.

The post holder must use a combination of knowledge and skills to ensure that appropriate sample testing and the issue of blood components and products are performed safely, accurately and in a timely manner, for every patient and in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations (BSQR) 2005.

The post is responsible for developing, (undertaking when necessary) and advising on both routine and specialised haematological investigations providing a Blood Transfusion support service. The post also carries a responsibility of working with the Training and Development Senior BMS to ensure competency and training is maintained to the required standard.

  • Qualification in pathology disciplines consistent with HCPC requirement.
  • MSc or equivalent experience in a relevant subject.
  • Current registration with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Specialist Diploma or equivalent experience in relevant discipline.

Experience

  • Demonstrate experience of working to a laboratory Quality management System, and full working knowledge of MHRA requirements for a BT laboratory.
  • Post-registration experience in a routine diagnostic/clinical laboratory and proficiency in relevant techniques.
  • Experience of using a Laboratory Information System.
  • Experience of supervising staff and of conducting appraisals.
