Main duties of the job

PHL are looking for General Practitioners with previous experience of emergency or urgent care or who have extended roles/special interests to expand the skillset and enrich the team. We welcome new applicants on a full-time, part-time, contracted or bank basis. The salary is highly competitive and reflects the actual time spent at work.

From 8am to 9pm, 7 days a week, we deliver urgent care; assessing and treating minor injuries and minor illnesses across all ages, backgrounds and geography. As a walk-in centre, serious illness and trauma also come through our door requiring stabilization and safe transfer to secondary care. We additionally offer extended access appointments where more routine care is seen.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work as part of a team for Lymington GP-led Urgent Treatment Centre. They will have access to appraisal, teaching and training and will be encouraged to pursue professional development.

The post holder will provide medical cover for the delivery of a safe, efficient and reliable clinical service. They will work closely with the Clinical Lead, and Service Manager. They will form links and develop relationships with secondary care and GP Service colleagues and those working in the wider healthcare community. The post holder will ensure patients receive optimal care in the correct setting within the healthcare system. Health policies and standard operating procedures will be adhered to and, if relevant, refined

In the clinic the patient will undergo clinical review, urgent investigations, eg x-rays, scans, blood tests; and a diagnosis and management plan will be agreed. Sometimes the patient is discussed with or seen by a specialist if the problem is complex. If possible, treatment will be started and the patient discharged home to be followed up by the patient’s own GP.

The service is staffed by a team of GP’s, Nurses, Paramedics, Healthcare assistants, Plaster Technicians and non clinical workforce.

Clinical Duties

The GP will work with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure appropriate care is delivered in the right place, at the right time. The post holder will be expected to

  • Maintain the highest clinical standards for all patients accessing the service.
  • Elucidate the primary reason for the patient’s attendance at the Urgent Treatment Centre.
  • Assess, investigate, diagnose and treat patients presenting with clinical needs which can be met by primary care.
  • Refer to secondary care where appropriate.
  • Provide emergency care while waiting for emergency transfer of patient when appropriate
  • Provide advice and support to colleagues and the multi disciplinary team.
  • Manage the flow of patients by balancing the clinical need of the patient with the capacity of the provider to deliver the necessary response.
  • Offer on-site assessment patients who require immediate further investigation and diagnostics.

  • Be responsible for the teaching and development of doctors, nurses and professionals from other disciplines such as Emergency Care Practitioners, GP registrars in Primary Care Skills. This may involve practitioners sitting in and seeing patients where appropriate.
  • Work with the Service Manager to ensure training, significant events, complaints, audits, surveys and other professional service development activities are achieved to ensure the smooth running of the service.
  • Maintain continued education through attendance at courses and/or study days as necessary to ensure professional development requirements for on-going professional registration and licensing are met.
  • Participate in, encourage and support professional development within the service.
  • Ensure that high clinical standards are maintained throughout the service.
  • Participate in annual appraisal and complete an annual personal development plan.
