Job summary

  • Salary £40,000 per year

  • £1000 bonus when completed 12 months service.

  • Full time (4 on, 4 off) and Part time roles available shifts will include days and Nights.

  • Average estimated overtime £3500 per annum

  • NMC/HCPC Registration paid

No previous forensic experience required as full training will be given.

The role requires the flexibility to work not only in your base Custody suite but across an assigned region in the Police Custody Suites and Force area.

Main duties of the job

The custody suites can be an energetic place to work, with no two shifts the same. Whilst detained, we provide individuals with all their physical, mental healthcare and wellbeing needs, as well as gather any forensic samples needed by the police to aid their investigations. Making careful records on our computerised systems, you'll be assessing whether people are fit to be detained or released, administering medications when needed, and working with local Liaison and Diversion teams to address root cause issues that can prevent future crime.

1. To deliver the requirements of the forensic practitioner service following the Codes of Practice of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the locally agreed protocols.

2. Provide advice and support to custody officers in determining the health care needs of detainees and the priorities of care, seeking advice from Seniors, Lead Seniors and Clinical Leads / Consultants on call when required.

3. Work with other members of the team to ensure that the service is provided at all times. Including demonstrating flexibility and acting supportively at all times.

4. Attend other sites as required: e.g. hospitals to carry out blood and toxicology procedures

5. Work with other members of the team including, where relevant: Liaison & Diversion, Court staff and Community Teams to ensure a seamless service is delivered, demonstrating flexibility and acting supportively at all times.

6. Identify vulnerabilities and make referrals to external services for the ongoing support of the service user

7. To understand and implement the principles of safeguarding children, young people and adults who have support needs. Ensuring compliance with local safeguarding policies, procedures and other statutory requirements.

8. Recognise any concerning features in presentation, history or examination that could be suggestive of safeguarding concerns and take relevant action, liaising with appropriate multi-disciplinary professionals.

  • RN, RGN or dual RMN/RGN Nursing: 2 years post qualification - Band 5 minimum
  • Paramedic 2 years post qualification.
  • Minimum of 2 years post qualification experience in a patient-facing role within a relevant field (General Practice, Emergency Medicine, Walk in Centres, Substance Misuse Services, Prison Healthcare, Mental Health, or Ambulance Service
