Job summary
Queensway Hospital is looking for an experienced & dynamic Modern Matron who will lead the Nursing team, ensuring that all colleagues are focused on providing positive outcomes for the people we support, in line with regulatory standards and company key performance indicators, policies and procedures. Also that our practice is evidenced and important tasks are audited in line with clinical governance and best practice.
Main duties of the job
Through strong ‘on the floor’ leadership, through regular ad-hoc and formal supervision and through leading by example - ensure that all colleagues provide excellent standards of care to the people we support, with a focus on positive outcomes, promoting choice, independence and positive behavioural support.
Ensure that Nursing Care Plans are person-centred, involve the patient and that they are reviewed and updated (minimum monthly). In addition, check that nursing ward round updates are confirmed with Doctors and MDT, then delivered to the patient via key working session and to the staff team by way of summary (both in readable format for handover and in person).
Maintain a system and monitoring of clinical ordering and supplies
Ensure staff are competent with electronic (such as patient record system / Incident Management) systems and processes, by way of policy and training. Check Nurses are able to amend (where necessary) and approve (counter sign) comprehensive clinical entries. Ensure flagging of ongoing improvement opportunities in the way Health Care Assistants and Staff nurses are documenting their day-day interactions and patient care. Practice good defensible documentation where necessary.
Ensure that patient record system audits and reports are generated on a weekly basis and acted upon within reasonable timescales, and that actions are delegated to and completed by Nurses.
Ensure that the service achieves and remains compliant with regulatory standards, health and safety, financial regulations, company policies and procedures.
Support in management of staff within the service through recruitment, colleague engagement and retention, and the effective use of bank staff to cover staff shortages.
Ensure that all service colleagues have completed all mandatory and specialist training.
Lead and develop a culture where the very highest standards of safety, quality and excellent patient care are consistently delivered and lead improvements and innovation in the delivery of services.
Ensure nursing team supervisions (and support hopsital manager in preparation of annual appraisals) are completed on time and with quality and the full participation of colleagues, to support their continuous professional development. Understanding that there are many elements to supervision.
Investigate thoroughly any alleged misconduct, maltreatment or abuse reported in the service and take appropriate follow-up action. This can include but not limited to; notifications (local authority / CQC / NHSE). Respond to any allegations against staff, work to enhance service safety and reduce risk of allegations.
Ensure the service has a positive reputation and good relationships with people in the local community, families and friends of the people we support and potential customers. Ensure boundaries are in place and that the nursing team a well educated in this aspect with the promotion of professionalism.
Ensure the team are compliant in training. Also take responsibility for own personal development and attendance at training.
Ensure excellent knowledge of current policies, procedures and governance affecting the service and the company. Contribute and support the service in the implementation / review of clinical policies.
Ensure incidents at the service are recorded appropriately into the electronic incident management system and reported to the relevant internal and external people/department, and that appropriate follow-up is undertaken including debriefs where appropriate. Ensure that all incidents from previous 24 hours (or weekend) are reviewed and approved. That any actions are taken (such as notifications) and necessary information is handed over to all staff. Ensure opportunities for learning from incidents are imbedded in the team.
Act as lead / named nurse for controlled drugs (register with pharmacy and CQC)
Ensure that the culture within the service is enabling for the people we support, actively promoting personalised services with maximum involvement and choice.
Work alongside IT to Support with the health roaster and safe care.
Ensure any new staff are linked up with an induction buddy (senior HCA), they receive an induction pack and check in regularly with that person through induction and probation. Support Hospital Manager to prepare for staff probations.
Directing and spending time on the units with staff, especially guiding the senior nurses.
Prepare qualitative reports from your completed clinical audits, to quantify results, compliance, and ongoing improvements. To ensure these are with the Hospital Management in advance, ready to present at our Clinical Governance Meetings.
Hold Clinical Governance Meetings on a monthly basis. Ensure these are minuted with ongoing actions and targets.
Ensure Nurses have a regularly reviewed and evidenced communication strategy (subject to assessed capacity and consent) with patients’ families, from a da-day Nursing perspective. Liaise with MDT and Doctors to ensure communication is seamless, coherent, understandable, and aligned with treatment objectives.
Act as a sign off mentor (or be willing to undergo this training and take responsibility for) students. Ensure ongoing communications with Universities to plan student rotations
Take part in (and lead in some cases) the recruitment process, of HCA’s and Nurses.
Take part in the delivery of training to staff.
Administer and manage nasogastric (NG) tube feeding, including insertion, monitoring, maintenance, and documentation in accordance with clinical protocols and patient care plans.
Any other reasonable leadership or managerial task as requested or delegated by centre manager towards clinical or nursing ongoing objectives or improvement measures.
