Job summary

The Assistant Medical Director (AMD) is a new and exciting role for the organisation as we continue to increase in our size and scope.

Patient safety is at the heart of everything we do. You will be supported to build strategic leadership capacity over time as IGPF continues to explore new opportunities to provide innovative and disruptive ways of delivering primary care in line with the NHS 10 Year Plan and other collaborative opportunities.

Main duties of the job

As AMD, you will support the Medical Director in providing clinical leadership and support across IGPF Services, projects, pilots and our GP Practices, including extended access services. You will ensure safe, consistent, and high-quality care through supportive oversight of clinical teams, service-level clinical governance, and collaborative problem-solving with clinical and operational colleagues. You will be supported by a strong clinical governance administration team and maintain a close and supportive relationship with the Medical Director. You will model a calm, fair and relationship-focused leadership style, helping clinical teams feel supported, valued, and able to learn.

About us

Islington GP Federation (IGPF) is a growing organisation representing 31 practices; we have established ourselves as a leader in new ways of working, including running Islingtons extended access primary care services (I:HUB) as well as supporting the Islington Primary Care Networks (PCNs).

Our current range of services include the Extended Access Service, I:HUB, Community Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Integrated Community Gynaecology, practice-based pharmacists and a range of practice support mechanisms.

IGPF works very closely with a range of partners including the regional commissioning group, NHS England, Healthy London Partnership, Public Health, local hospitals such as UCLH, Whittington Health and the London Borough of Islington.

IGPF is the host organisation for the Primary Care Network (PCN) workforce and the Islington Training Hub and has been working for over two years to create training and development programmes that meet the needs of staff working in primary and community care settings.

IGPF runs four Islington GP practices, one on a GMS contract, two on APMS contracts and one caretaking contracts.

Clinical Leadership & Team Support

As AMD you will:

  • Build strong, visible relationships across practices, services and teams
  • Act as a supportive clinical point of contact for service leads, clinicians and practice teams.
  • Provide clinical leadership & oversight to our IGPF Practice Clinical and Operational Leads through operational and clinical lead meetings.
  • Provide calm, fair and steady leadership during periods of operational pressure.
  • Promote an open learning culture within IGPF

Clinical Governance

With the support of the IGPF Medical Director and Executive Team:

  • Lead our learning and incident review process at service and organisational level, ensuring we share learning across the organisation and across the system.
  • Co-chair and develop our service-level clinical governance meetings and support teams to reflect, learn and improve.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); policies and guidance, working collaboratively with clinical leads and operational managers to ensure these are robust, relevant and fit for purpose across our organisation.
  • Provide safeguarding support to services, escalating to the Medical Director (as organisational safeguarding lead) where needed.
  • Work closely with operational leads to ensure robust, consistent governance processes across services.

Clinical Safety Officer Role

You will be supported to

Develop and act as the appointed Clinical Safety Officer (CSO) for IGPF as we test and develop new technologies in healthcare

Support others in development of this role.

Quality Assurance & Improvement

As AMD you will:

  • Support clinical and operational leads to use QI methodology with service-level clinical data to identify patterns, variation and opportunities for improvement across the organisation.
  • Work with teams to implement timely, pragmatic improvements with the support of the Medical Director
  • Support practices and services to maintain readiness for CQC and commissioner assurance processes.
