Business Development & Communications Lead

Job summary

The Business Development & Communications Lead is a new role, which incorporates strategic and operational responsibilities for driving the growth and development of the organisation through its business initiatives and effective communication strategies. This position involves building strong relationships with key stakeholders, identifying new opportunities for service expansion, leading bid initiatives and enhancing the federation's visibility and reputation within the community.

The successful candidate will have significant leadership experience in NHS commissioning and / or large-scale provider delivery. They will have an expert level of understanding of General Practice and Primary Care as specific health sectors and their likely roles within the new NHS 10 Year delivery programme. They will have worked in the London health and social care system.

This role is a permanent contract, based on 3-4 days per week and subject to a 6-month probationary review process.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the organisations external communications, ensuring consistent messaging, and supporting the organisations overall objectives of improving patient care and healthcare delivery.

This role will help steer Islington GP Federation through the emerging landscape being defined by the NHS 10 Year Plan, seeking to make sense of the ambitions surfacing nationally and locally. They will play a key role in shaping the organisations response to the opportunities arising and to contribute to the development and adaptation of the organisation to leverage the opportunities, barriers and new landscape in general.

The successful candidate will be part of Islington GP Federations executive leadership team, which is responsible for the business overall, reporting into the Board.

About us

The Islington GP Group Limited (known as Islington GP Federation of IGPF) is a large-scale Primary Care organisation incorporated by Islington GP practices in 2016. It was set up as a service innovation, design & delivery provider to help shareholder practices become better connected and more resilient, supported by one another and integrated into the borough system. IGPF provides a wide range of clinical and support services to Islington GPs, their patients and associated health and social care partner organisations. In 2023-24, IGPF was involved in 80+ projects and employed 430 staff.

IGPF is recognised as a leader in new ways of working, including running Islington's extended access primary care service (I: HUB), supporting Islington's Primary Care Networks (PCNs) running Community Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and gynaecology services, holding four GP practice contracts, employing an Islington-wide team of practice-based pharmacists, and a range of practice support mechanisms. IGPF is the host organisation for the Primary Care Network (PCN) workforce and the Islington Training Hub and has been working for over three years to create training and development programmes that meet the needs of staff working in primary and community care settings.

Key duties and responsibilities:

Business development

  • Identify and pursue new opportunities for service expansion, partnership development, and funding sources to support the business growth.
  • Lead IGPFs bidding processes and initiatives and prepare proposals for new projects, collaborations, and funding grants.
  • Work with the deputy CEO to develop and implement strategic plans to increase the federations footprint within the community and healthcare sector, particularly in the context of the NHS Neighbourhood Health programme.
  • Lead IGPFs insights processes to ensure the organisation remains informed about all aspects of the NHS landscape, along with associated commercial sectors from entrepreneurial tech innovation working with IGPFs Digital Product Lead - to the evolution of new private health initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, including commissioners, partners, and community organisations as part of IGPFs overall leadership team and strategic priorities.

Communications & stakeholder engagement

  • Develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies to promote the Islington GP Federations services, achievements, and initiatives. Including working with the Board and Executive teams to refine and develop IGPFs overall role and positioning within the NHS 10 Year Plan. Develop the IGPF role and narrative the story.
  • Lead and execute IGPFs applications to both national and local award programmes.
  • Lead internal and external communication processes and ensure the organisation makes best possible use of both analogue and digital media channels and opportunities.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for media and public relations activities. Organise and support engagement events, community outreach activities, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all IGPF business activities and delivery channels.

Leadership & collaboration

  • Work closely with senior management colleagues and clinical teams to align business development and communication strategies with organisational goals.
  • Provide leadership, advice and support to staff on the development of communication and business development strengths.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication campaigns and business development initiatives, adjusting strategies as needed.

Reporting & compliance

  • Prepare reports on business development activities, stakeholder engagement, and communication outcomes for senior management and funders.
  • Ensure all activities comply with relevant policies, regulations, and ethical standards.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Stay informed about relevant policy changes, funding opportunities, and industry developments.
  • Represent the Federation at external meetings, conferences, and networking events.
