Main duties of the job

The Senior MRI Radiographer will report to the Radiology Services Manager and play a key role within a multi-disciplinary team to deliver high-quality MRI and radiography services. Responsible for coordinating the daily workload, they will prioritise clinical needs and optimise scanner usage and equipment resources. The postholder will demonstrate advanced technical and clinical expertise across a range of procedures including abdominal, orthopaedic, vascular, gynaecological, and multi-parametric prostate imaging, with cardiac MRI experience desirable. Have substantial experience in General Radiography and Fluroscopy /theatre procedures. Compliance, knowledge and understanding of IR(ME)R 24 regulations and IRR17. They will work both independently and collaboratively, ensuring adherence to departmental protocols and safety standards, while contributing to the delivery of a safe, efficient, and patient-centred scanning service. Participate in a 24/7 On call service (where appropriate to suit the demands of the service).

Job description

Job responsibilities

Have experience on a 1.5T MRI machine, GE preferable.

Take responsibility for the IV cannulation and drug administration relevant to the examination performed, including checking blood results and the medical history of the patient to ensure they have no contraindications to the administration of the drug (taking delegated responsibility according to locally approved PGDs and local & national protocols).

To be aware of, and able to deal with any possible complications of the drug administration, without direct supervision by medical personnel.

Perform intravenous cannulation for patients undergoing MRI and administer IV drugs and contrast agents according to local and national protocols. This involves ascertaining the patients suitability for IV drugs and taking joint responsibility for the potential complications under the indirect supervision of radiologists.

Be responsible for the exposure of the patient in response to the answers provided on the checklist, according to local protocol.

Be fully aware of the bio-effects of MRI, ensure that patients are screened according to national and local protocol, and ensure the MRI scanners are operated within safe limits. This will involve risk/benefit decisions taking individual patients and situations into account. Be fully familiar with safety procedures specific to the MRI environment e.g. fire, magnet quench, and cardiac arrest where there is a potentially fatal risk to staff and rescue personnel if the situation is inappropriately managed.

Provide advice to radiographers in the selection of the most appropriate coils and equipment and modify protocols to obtain diagnostic information with regard to clinical indications, individual patient conditions and imaging findings, manipulating scan parameters to optimise the examination. This requires an in-depth understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of Radiography and MRI.

Take responsibility for the day to day potential hazards of working in an area of strong magnetic fields and be fully aware of the latest safety guidelines issued by the MHRA. Review images produced and in the absence of a radiologist, ensure that any additional imaging procedures or scans are acquired prior to the patient leaving the department. Bring to the attention of the radiologist (or referring clinician in their absence) the presence of any pathology that may suggest that urgent medical intervention is indicated.

Adhere with Quality Assurance checks daily.

To ensure equipment in the radiography department is regularly maintained and where required, repaired or replaced on a timely basis.

Communicate and work closely with Radiologists and consultants in setting up policies and protocols for all imaging and patient pathways.

Excellent verbal, written interpersonal communication skills.

Communicate effectively with the Multidisciplinary team in order to promote efficient patient care and maintain effective channels of communication both with staff and patients.

To maintain staff morale and contribute through a positive and proactive example in communication and leadership

Liaise with other clinical areas as necessary for the co-ordination of patient care.

Adapt organizational and problem-solving skills with patients and service focused approach and strong clinical decision-making skills.

Overall management of the running of the Radiography/MRI service on a day to day basis ensuring the highest standard of care and service.

Experience with Picture Archiving Communications Systems (PACS)

Usage of general Information Technology systems, and willingness to learn HMT Hospital Management System for patient records, billing and radiology worklist orders.

Proven experience in people management as well as organizing sessions in Radiography.
