Job summary

Thurrock Alliance is hosting an exciting opportunity which has been created with external (NHSE) funding to deliver a 2-year programme supporting families with young children (pre-school and reception to year 3), to improve their childs oral health. This will take the form of a supervised toothbrushing programme and advice to families on healthy eating. The two roles are that of a Community Champion, working closely with Thurrock Family Hubs and 10 identified primary schools across the borough, and helping to deliver a train-the-trainers programme for schools, childminders, Family Hubs, primary care, and others working in health and care services.

You will work with the Programme Co-ordinator to define and deliver objectives specific to the needs of the Thurrock locality, securing tangible improvements in oral health across local communities.

Although you will be based within Thurrock Alliance, you will work closely and collaboratively with teams across the ICB.

You will be a dynamic, motivated individual who is a self-starter, able to adapt to new strategies, ideas, and ways of working as they enable delivery of the programme.

Fixed Term Contract is until the end of September 2025

Places of work: ICB Head Office Phoenix Court Basildon, home and various locations in Thurrock.

Main duties of the job

COMPETENCY BASED KEY DELIVERABLES

  • Responsible for decisions made during the course of duties, seeking guidance and escalating issues where appropriate
  • Responsible for the monitoring of one or more budgets.

  • Build effective and sustainable working relationships with a broad range of partners in the Thurrock area.
  • Act as a Community Champion for the programme ensuring good communication underpins the activities.
  • Work closely with Thurrock Family Hubs, Primary Schools, Primary Care, and dental services to support delivery of outcomes.
  • Work with the EYOH Programme Co-ordinator to deliver focussed training on supervised toothbrushing for partners/parents.
  • Recording and maintaining accurate records of interventions undertaken.
  • Receive updates and information from Family Hubs and other partners.
  • Share health messages with Family Hubs and all partners using a variety of channels (e.g face-to-face, telephone, email, WhatsApp) and formats (one-to-one, groups etc)
  • Support the Programme Co-ordinator to develop and deliver Community Engagement Co-Production Events
  • Encouraging and supporting children, parents, and schools, to adopt good oral health practices.
  • Deliver supervised tooth brushing initiative in a range of locations and settings.

The Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System will comprise the Integrated Care Board (ICB), which is the statutory body for the NHS, and the Integrated Care Partnership (ICP), which is a committee of the ICB, and brings together key health, care, community and voluntary sector organisations across the area.

The ICS has a bold ambition to deliver improved outcomes for our 1.2m population through our four Alliances, and we are placing clinical and professional leadership and the voice of our residents at the heart of realizing this ambition.

The Early Years Oral Health Programme is designed to support young children in achieving good oral health from an early age and is targeted at children and families in the CORE20 PLUS5 cohort of residents. Using the CORE20 PLUS5 framework, the priority PLUS groups (SEND, LAC, deprivation, refugees, asylum seekers and migrants) to deliver targeted preventative actions.

Thurrock has areas of significant deprivation within the borough, where more than 1 in 5 children under 16 grow up in poverty (21.2%). 6% of children in parts of Grays are living in poverty, and 56.4% of children in parts of Tilbury are living in poverty.

These factors impact the health and wellbeing of families and Thurrock has the highest incidence of admissions to hospital for dental extractions in children and young people and the lowest rates of dental access for 017-year-olds, with the highest prevalence of dental decay in 5-year-olds in East of England Region.

This role will support the co-ordination of the operational activities on the two-year programme which will focus on supervised tooth brushing through the Family Hubs and across education. The target age group for this programme is pre-school and reception to year 3, through 10 programmes of activity (these programmes to be run simultaneously)

The aim of the programme is to accelerate areas for improvement in reducing oral health inequalities across MSE, focussing on activities in Thurrock and ensuring that the benefits and learning are embedded across Mid & South Essex ICS footprint.

The Community Champion will work closely with partners in the Family Hubs, Schools, CVSE and other agencies to identify opportunities to implement oral health prevention strategies into current children & young people workstreams and work with ICB teams and stakeholder partners to increase access to dental services

The role will sit within the Thurrock Alliance Team and will report to the Early Years Oral health Programme Co-ordinator
