Job summary
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Clinical and Care Professional Lead - Education - to support the delivery of our People Strategy. This role is suitable for portfolio-style working professionals who have in-depth understanding of the workforce challenges across health and social care, and is offered on 1 day per week basis, either via a 2-year secondment or fixed term contract. We welcome applications from any clinical and care profession (e.g., nursing, midwifery, social care, therapy, pharmacy).
You will have an established professional network and be able to demonstrate the ability to influence at strategic level across professional groups in education development and new ways of working.
Main duties of the job
This role is an ideal secondment or fixed term portfolio opportunity for current SEL system leaders to provide strategic clinical/front line expertise to influence the education priorities of emerging ICS People Strategy Integrated Care Strategic Priorities for 2023-28 (selondonics.org)
This role is one of two professional/clinical lead roles that will provide strategic support to the workforce programme senior leadership team. This role will work closely with the professional lead (innovation) to support the complex delivery of the ICS People Strategy priorities.
We are particularly keen to attract interest from our front line service professionals from social care, voluntary sector, nursing, therapies, medics etc who have skills and interest in:
- Setting of strategic direction for the ICS education priorities
- Shaping the education of new ways or working, roles and pathways
- Supporting key decision-making in maximising education budgets/investments and levy;
- Networking, collaborating and influencing education across our system partners

The Professional/Clinical Lead will be part of the SEL ICS workforce programme team and will report into the Director of SEL ICS workforce programme with specific focus on driving education and training across system partners. The postholder will also work in conjunction with subject matter expert leadership colleagues in ICB and partner ICS organisations as needed for specific portfolio projects.
On a day-to-day basis, the post holder will:
- Provide strategic professional and clinical leadership to the Head of Education to set a portfolio of work linked to education and training ICS priorities that support improvements in workforce supply.
- Lead and influence senior level engagement with partners and education providers to agree actions linked to a newly developed education strategy for SEL.
- Highly developed skills in the use of complex methods of assessment, intervention and management, including the use of theoretical models to analyse, interpret and compare range of information.
- Ensure evidence and analytics are secured to support, inform activities and use the information in an insightful way to identify and mitigate risks and make measurable improvements to workforce.
- To provide Line management and Professional advice and support to the SEL ICS Workforce Programme team.
- Support the work programme under newly defined education governance to support all professional groups and have oversight of the education and training budget.
- Take strategic decisions and follow up action to mitigate against risks to workforce supply by liaison and planning with regulatory bodies and ICS senior leaders in order to influence national actions and proactively support a SEL ICS response.
- Lead the design and development of new approaches to education and training delivering as required to address the People Strategy and operational response.
- Drive the overarching governance for the work programme.
- Be a key strategic contributor to the Board Assurance Framework (BAF) as professional/clinical lead for education, identifying interdependencies with other BAF risks as appropriate.
- Provide strategic professional/clinical advisory support to Director of SEL ICS Workforce Programme as needed.
- Drawing from experience and expertise from national and global academic partners including industry, ensure that the System leaders benefits from access to research programmes and other appropriate innovations.
- Agree milestones and metrics with the Joint Medical Directors for regular reporting to governance fora.
- Produce high quality professional results to specified deadlines and other time constraints.
