Job summary
The role of the GPN Research Clinical Fellow for the South West is to lead the implementation of the South West GPN Research Strategy. The post-holder will ensure that there is visible nurse leadership and senior support for research in Practice Nursing and its ongoing development as a career option across the South West.
You will have significant experience of working both in General Practice and in research.
The post will be hosted by BNSSG Training Hub and work across the South West region. You will work closely with the South West GPN Programme and the South West Research Programme to develop, extend and enhance the current research opportunities for Practice Nurses and Practice Nurse students in Primary Care. Key to the role will be stakeholder engagement and an understanding of research in general practice, nurse-led research, leadership and academic opportunities.
Main duties of the job
This autonomous role requires interaction & engagement with other primary care professionals across the system, including close working with Training Hubs, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and NHS England as well as GPs, HCAs, administrative staff, and patient groups.
You will lead the SW GPN research agenda within the context of national policy and deliver a wide range of objectives to promote research to GPNs. You will be familiar with the CNO's strategic plan for research, which will be strongly aligned to the SW agenda. This strategy requires innovative thinking, transformational experience, & strong leadership from the post holder, who will work collaboratively with stakeholders, to drive the delivery of policy & strategy across the region, to ensure the delivery of the agreed outcomes within the year.
You will liaise with other GPN leaders, nurse research leads and subject matter experts across the region and nationally. You will also build a recognised career pathway for GPNs in research within the South West and directly support GPNs wishing to engage in research. Knowledge of how to access funding and support for research is essential, as is experience of writing for publication. You will also set up a Community of Practice for GPNs engaged in, or who would like to be engaged in research.
You will work with the Academic Health Science Networks & other stakeholders to ensure that GPNs engaged in research are supported and nurtured across the South West.

- Educated to MSc level or equivalent professional clinical experience, plus significant breadth, and depth of experience as below across a range of disciplines such as higher education institutes, conducting primary and secondary research, writing for publication, grant applications.
- Extensive knowledge/clinical experience of GPN specialist area acquired through postgraduate education or equivalent experience.
