Regional Genomic Practitioner

Job summary

Would you like to play a part in bringing the benefits of genomic medicine to patients?

This is a novel opportunity to inform and shape patient care and cancer services to incorporate genomic healthcare across the East of England Cancer Alliance geography.

Over the next ten years, the NHS plans to routinely offer genomic testing to all people with cancer for whom it would be of clinical benefit and it is expected that most future cancer therapies will be targeted to tumours based on specific genomic and other biomarkers.

Pathways will need to be redesigned to enable for example the collection of biopsies for cancer genomics early in the diagnosis pathway so as to ensure the timely return of genomic test results to inform clinical care and decision making.

Furthermore, genomics will be routinely used in the 'healthy population' to accurately predict the risk of cancer within national screening programmes for at risk populations.

To meet these challenges in the East of England the Cancer Alliance is funding a team of Genomic Clinical Practitioners aligned to the East Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (GMSA), the Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH) and the East of England Medical Genetics Service (MGS) that will facilitate, support, and engage with primary and secondary care colleagues to develop pathways and embed genomic testing and advice for all service users in cancer care. This regional service will help to bring genomics into mainstream cancer care.

Please note this post can only be offered as a secondment.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a small team of nurses & / or Allied Health Professionals to work across the East of England geography, but with each post holder having a dedicated responsibility for one Integrated Care System. These post holders will work autonomously, and it is expected that they should be able to demonstrate awareness of genomic landscape to facilitate the mainstreaming of genomic medicine across primary, secondary, and tertiary care sites, support colleagues, individuals, and families, and address important ethical issues such as equity of access.

About us

Health and care services in Norfolk and Waveney are working closely together to further improve services and provide more joined-up care for local people. In Norfolk and Waveney, we have already achieved a lot by working in partnership to improve health and care outcomes. These changes have been made possible by different organisations - NHS hospitals, GPs, mental health and community health services, local councils, care homes and social workers, voluntary and community organisations and others - joining forces to agree and plan for local people's needs.

Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care System (ICS) includes a statutory Integrated Care Partnership (ICP), and an Integrated Care Board (ICB) called NHS Norfolk and Waveney. This partnership and organisation dedicated to making sure that organisations work together for the benefit of our residents, staff and communities is an important step change, helping to create positive differences to local people and joining up health and social care. This is the culmination of many years of effort to build partnership working across the NHS, local authorities, the third sector and patient groups.

This secondment opportunity is open to any candidate whose substantive employer is supportive of them progressing with an application.
