Job summary

Applications are invited for enthusiastic dental nurses to join the Specialised Dental Service of Wirral Community Health & care NHS Foundation Trust as a Bank Dental Nurse providing care to patients on an adhoc basis when required. This is to work in both our Community Dental Service and our Personal Dental Service (PDS) at several sites across the Wirral area.

The remit of the Wirral Community Health and Care Specialised Dental Service is to provide both routine general dental services for patients within the Leasowe area of Wirral and specialised care for patients with additional needs within the Community Dental Service.

Our Community Dental Service provides care for patients with learning disabilities, mental health problems, complex medical conditions, misusing substances, physical disabilities and phobias. The treatment can include routine treatment with local anaesthetic or treatment using inhalation, intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia. Patients may be referred to the service for single Specialist-led course of treatment, be in a shared care arrangement with a local General Dental Practitioner orbe maintained as a long standing patient within the service dependant on patient need.

Our Personal Dental Service provides routine general dental services for patients within the Leasowe area of Wirral, based at Leasowe Dental Clinic.

Both aspects of the service may include dental care on a domiciliary basis where appropriate.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties working within a dental surgery in line with job description, assisting the dentist with the treatment of the patient. This will require the knowledge and anticipation of the dentist's requirements. Some of the patients will have complex needs and demonstrate challenging behaviour. Additionally, there will be exposure to blood and saliva.

This will also include giving advice on oral hygiene, dietary intake and post-operative instructions and processing of digital radiographs.

Manage the cleaning and decontamination of dental instruments and equipment after use in accordance with Trust and National guidelines.

Assisting the dentist on domiciliary visits as necessary, including visits to hospitals, nursing homes and private homes.

Assisting the dentist during the treatment of patients under sedation and general anaesthesia as required.

Administrative Duties in line with job description. This will include the use of computerised patient records systems.

Candidates will be expected to work flexibly across all sites dependent on experience. this may include moving between sites during the working day.

Candidates should be available to work flexibly as required during weekdays, evenings and Saturdays as required. Pay enhancements may be applicable for some working patterns.
