Wheelchair Rehabilitation Assistant

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a new member to join our multidisciplinary Wheelchair Services team as a Band 3 Rehabilitation Assistant for the next 18 months. We are looking for a passionate, flexible, organised, and patient-focused individual to join our us to support with the delivery of high standards of health care to our patients and provide clinical support to our clinicians. You will be joining an experienced team or registered therapists who will direct you in supporting basic adaptions to patient wheelchairs.

This role will include flexible working in both Wheelchair Assessment and Wheelchair Repairs.

Main duties of the job

  • Apply competency-based skills within scope of practice under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, following a care plan
  • To be able to undertake environmental assessments and document finding
  • To be able to deliver, set up and instruct service users and carers with reference to the use of basic wheelchairs, cushions and accessories
  • To have a basic understanding of pressure management issues for wheelchair users
  • Liaise with other health care professionals as required
  • Communicate with patients/carers by exchanging factual information, reassurance, tact and empathy
  • Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships
  • To recognise the boundaries of the assistant role and when to refer issues to the appropriate clinician
  • Demonstrate dexterity and coordination when undertaking treatment of patients where accuracy is important
  • Be responsible for ensuring equipment is used safely, following relevant training
  • Work independently on specified tasks, with regular clinical supervision by a qualified practitioner. This could include personal care tasks
  • Demonstrate an understanding of consent and gain consent as appropriate
  • Share responsibility for maintaining store cupboards, cleaning specialist equipment, and general housekeeping tasks
  • Sharing responsibilities with clinicians to maintain vehicle upkeep, driving long distances, collecting equipment from our WRS team, this may be required daily
  • Must utilise universal precautions and adhere to infection control policies
