Porter- Norwich Community Hospital- Full time - 37.5 hours per weekIncludes weekend working (1 in 4 weekends rota)

The Portering service supports the daily running of a wide range of ancillary services across hospital, health centre and other Trust sites.

The Portering team work alongside Trust staff to ensure the Trust is enabled in its delivery of front line health care service. Your role will involve many tasks which maintain the smooth running of the Trust sites. As a porter your role will develop and will be generic across a wide range of duties and skill sets.

The key duties listed below are some of the tasks you may be asked to undertake but may vary according to the operational requirements of the services supported across the Trust estate.

The range of duties listed below are those which may be undertaken by the post holder, either regularly or infrequently after appropriate and adequate training has been undertaken successfully.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties & ResponsibilitiesGENERAL

  1. General messenger duties. Porters will be expected to be always contactable via the mobile phone supplied by the Trust.2. General security duties by:o Ensuring that all doors are locked / opened at the appropriate times.o Ensure all windows and doors are shut and locked if appropriate.o Report any unauthorized persons or any untoward occurrences to the Facilities Manager3. To clear pathways of snow and ice and spreading of grit/ clearing of leaves/ litter when necessary and requested to do so ensuring the sites general tidiness.4. The escorting or directing of patients and visitors using the sites and dealing with enquiries.5. To undertake flushing of identified water systems, complete the relevant paperwork and file the paperwork appropriately, as instructed from time to time.6. Assist in the conduct of any site audits requested by the Facilities Manager.7. The preparation of rooms for meetings, including transfer of equipment and refreshments, e.g. video, overhead projector and screen, flip chart etc on receipt of a portering request.8. Be observant of parking issues and keep area clear and accessible for ambulances, delivery vehicles etc.9. To carry out any other portering related duties, both of a routine and non-routine nature, not specified in this job description, as requested by the Facilities Manager.10. Report issues/ defects through the Helpdesk.

MOVING AND HANDLING1. Reception and delivery to wards / departments of stores, mail, beds, bedding, furniture, medical equipment and CSSD, collection and delivery of bloods and medication.2. Delivery to wards and departments of all laundry/linen.WASTE1. Collection of soiled linen, clinical waste, refuse and recycling from all wards/ departments.2. Dispose of all waste in accordance with Trust policy.3. Monitor the disposal of waste e.g. skip, clinical waste and alert the Facilities Manager if there is a problem with the collection of waste by outside contractorsMEDICAL GAS1. Collect oxygen cylinders from stores for delivery to the wards and return the empty cylinders to storage for supplier collection.2. Connect J/W size oxygen cylinders to medical gas pipe system (MGPS) manifold.3. Check for leakages every day, ensuring the gauges are working correctly and to report any hazards relating to the operation of medical gas cylinders. Also ensure that the area is safe, compliant and clean.4. Order new cylinders, as required, in liaison with ward staff.5.
