Job summary

This role combines the duties of a driver (typically 0.6 FTE) and a porter (typically 0.4 FTE).

Norfolk Community Health and Care deliver services from a number of locations; we require a driver / porter to deliver and collect goods in scheduled and unscheduled situations within the Norfolk area. The postholder will perform the duties of a driver principally working on our community clinical waste contract. This involves delivering bins, collecting and disposing of waste from patient's homes whilst adhering to legal requirements.

The portering service supports the daily running of a wide range of ancillary services across hospital, health centre and other Trust sites. The portering team work alongside Trust staff to ensure we deliver health care. Your role will involve tasks which maintain the smooth running of Trust sites. As a porter your role will develop across a wide range of duties and skill sets.

Main duties of the job

  • Driving a van and collecting clinical waste from patient homes across Norfolk - working independently and requiring route planning, records keeping and safe and competent driving skills (B1 licence).
  • Manual handling of furniture and equipment
  • Waste and laundry collection and disposal
  • Medical gas cylinder handling and replenishment
  • Managing stores deliveries
  • Delivering internal mail and stores
  • Flushing water outlets

About us

The estates and facilities team consist of approximately 30 staff and it is a tight knit unit. The department provides total facilities management through in-house and contracted out services. The service provided is fast moving and the output high but the team are supportive, experienced and provide advice and direction to new starters.

Job responsibilities

GENERAL

1. General messenger duties. Porters will be expected to be contactable at all times during working hours via the mobile smartphone supplied by the Trust.

2. General security duties by: Ensuring that all doors are locked / opened at the appropriate times. Ensure all windows and doors are shut and locked if appropriate. Report any unauthorised persons or any untoward occurrences to the Facilities Manager

3. To clear pathways of snow and ice and spreading of grit when necessary and requested to do so

4. The escorting or directing of patients and visitors using the sites and dealing with enquiries

5. To undertake flushing of identified water systems, complete the relevant paperwork and file the paperwork appropriately, as instructed from time to time

6. Assist in the conduct of any site audits requested by the Facilities Manager

7. The preparation of rooms for meetings, including transfer of equipment and refreshments, e.g. video, overhead projector and screen, flip chart etc

8. Monitor parking and keep area clear and accessible for ambulances, delivery vehicles etc.

9. To carry out any other portering related duties, both of a routine and non-routine nature, not specified in this job description, as requested by the Facilities Manager in consultation with the post holder

DRIVING

1. Collecting and disposing of containerized clinical waste from patients homes

2. Adhering to the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Agreement (ADR).

3. Must attend and pass the ADR refresher course to perform these duties and maintain the license.

4. Responsible for ensuring vehicles contain all relevant ADR equipment, and are kept clean, secure and well-maintained.

5. Responsible for optimal route planning and accurate records-keeping. Update SystmOne (our patient record system) with collection outcomes, and reporting issues to the Waste Team.

6. Cover for absent colleagues.

7. Assisting with our REUSE-IT scheme by transporting furniture/equipment across hospital sites, or occasionally to staff members homes to enable home working

8. Responsible for keeping the Trust van well maintained (i.e. washed, filled with petrol, check tyres) and report any vehicle accidents or damage to your Line Manager. This may include taking photos of the van daily before use.

MOVING AND HANDLING

1. Reception and delivery to wards / departments of stores, mail, beds, bedding, furniture, medical equipment and CSSD etc

2. Delivery and collection to wards and departments of all laundry/linen. (This may also include ordering of linen on some sites)

3. Conveyance of equipment, goods etc. between wards/departments as requested

4. To collect specimens and take to pick up point. Collection and delivery of bloods, drugs, internal and external post to and from all wards / departments

WASTE

1. Collection of soiled linen, clinical waste, refuse and recycling from all wards/ departments, including litter picking in and around Trust sites.

2. Dispose of all waste in accordance with Trust policy

3. Monitor the disposal of waste e.g. skip, clinical waste and alert the Estates Manager (Operations) if there is a problem with the collection of waste by outside contractors

MEDICAL GAS

1. Collect oxygen cylinders from stores for delivery to the wards and return the empty cylinders to storage for supplier collection2. Connect J size oxygen cylinders to medical gas pipe system (MGPS) manifold3. Check for leakages every day, ensuring the gauges are working correctly and to report any hazards relating to the operation of medical gas cylinders4. Order new cylinders, as required, in liaison with ward staff5. Report and record on medical gas provision daily
