Job summary

We are looking for an ambitious individual to join our Paediatric Audiology team.

This job is an excellent opportunity for an audiologist with an interest in Paediatric Audiology. The service is being delivered from dedicated and purpose-built Paediatric audiology suites in Warrington. The main base is the Child Development Centre in Orford and our other site is at Europa Boulevard, Westbrook.

The applicant must have a good knowledge of audiology. The applicant is expected to increase their skills and expertise in the field.

The successful candidate will have a BSc and/or MSc in Audiology (or equivalent) and will have AHCS (previously RCCP) registration.

The work is community based therefore it is essential that the successful candidate can travel between our 2 sites to meet the requirements of the role.

The role involves completing audiological assessments with babies from 8 months old. We also conduct joint clinics with the Audiology team from Warrington Hospital tocomplete paediatric hearing aid fittings.

We are a friendly, forward thinking department. We actively encourage and support further educational development, attendance at courses/conferences.

Main duties of the job

Job Purpose

To be a member of a multidisciplinary team providing a comprehensive and integrated community Paediatric Audiology service for babies, children, and young adults.

To develop paediatric audiology skills

Work both as a team and autonomously to manage own clinics and individual workload.

Complete specialist work which includes:

comprehensive testing and diagnostic assessments of hearing

in-depth knowledge of paediatric test protocols, and assessment techniques.

manage hearing loss in infants and children

carry out basic hearing aid maintenance including retubing / impressions

  • Perform diagnostic hearing assessment on pre-school and school age children and analyse the results, including:

    • Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)
    • Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA)
    • Performance testing
    • Speech discrimination testing
    • Tests of middle ear function using tympanometry
    • Otoacoustic Emissions

  • Complete audiological testing of babies that are referred following their newborn hearing screen, using Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) to detect cochlear function.

  • Carry out otoscopy following BSA recommended procedures
    • identify any contraindications or indications for further procedures e.g. tympanometry and aural impression taking.
    • Identify atypical or abnormal ear conditions and make appropriate onward referrals

  • Take accurate and safe impressions of the ear following BSA recommended procedures for impression taking.

  • Arrange referral to other professionals for treatment/management when required, following local and national guidance. E.g. referring to ENT for management of middle ear effusion.

  • Manage hearing loss in infants and children

  • Carry out reviews with hearing aid users in collaboration with the Warrington and Halton Foundation Trust team. The WHHFT team assist our service by fitting the hearing aids on our joint clinics.

The role involves completing clinics with our Associate-Specialist in Community

  • Paediatrics (Audiology) / Clinical Lead as well as other paediatric audiologists in the team

  • Use of outcome measures to support and guide habilitation/rehabilitation

  • Carry out simple hearing aid repairs and maintenance e.g. retubing

  • Carry out routine maintenance and calibration checks on audiological equipment, reporting faults and arranging for repair when necessary.

  • Maintain accurate recording of results and update patient records.

  • Write reports to relevant health professionals

  • Ensures adequate and smooth transition of children onto Adult Audiology Services, via a Transition Clinic.

  • Responsible for maintaining own workload, prioritising referrals and planning work for junior staff. Plans day to day duties and routine clinics.

  • Demonstrate flexibility to meet the needs of children with complex needs, and adapt test procedures based on the needs of the child

  • Demonstrate flexibility to deal with urgent referrals and queries

  • Collaborates with Audiology Manager to ensure an efficient and effective Audiology department.

  • Monitor stock and advise senior staff/management on re-ordering requirements.

  • Work and communicate effectively and courteously with patients, colleagues, public and members of the directorate and the trust
