Job responsibilities

Job Purpose

To be responsible for the assessment, treatment and management of patients.

To provide advice and education to healthcare professional and carers.

The post involves working closely with the Multi-disciplinary Team.

Principal Responsibilities:

Clinical

To undertake comprehensive examination and assessment of patients including those with diverse presentations/multiple pathologies; using clinical reasoning skills and manual examination techniques to provide an accurate clinical diagnosis.

To develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme based on the above

To constantly re-examine the patients response to treatment and modify programme accordingly.

To hold responsibility for and organise own caseload within delegated areas of the service with ongoing support from a senior therapist.

To communicate effectively with all members of the multi disciplinary team, physiotherapy colleagues and outside agencies. (e.g. social services)

To delegate responsibility as appropriate e.g. assistants and clerical staff.

Professional Development

To apply evidence based practice

To continually evaluate clinical practice and modify approach in line with team and organisational objectives.

To select and apply appropriate clinical outcome measures to support service effectiveness.

To identify personal training needs and maintain up to date clinical expertise by using appropriate learning opportunities.

To participate in protected learning time, including sharing in the delivery of education after external courses.

To attend internal courses both organised by the physiotherapy department and mandatory courses delivered by the Trust.

To participate in the Individual Performance Review system.

Education and Research

To provide advice and education to patients, GPs and other health care professionals.

To be involved in training of healthcare professionals and carers.

To participate in relevant audit to meet HCC and NHSLA requirements.

Organisational

To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and to organise this effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.

To work as a lone practitioner, with access to a senior physiotherapist. To organise appointments, manage daily workload, paper and computer administration tasks, and making and receiving patient related telephone calls.

To provide and maintain accurate and up to date patient records and to communicate assessment and treatment results to the appropriate disciplines in the form of letters, reports and entries onto IT systems, in accordance with the Trust and CSP guidelines.

To be actively involved in the provision and collection of accurate statistical information

To participate in evaluation of the service. To assist in implementation of new working practices.

To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in the reviewing and updating as appropriate.

Communication

To use communication skills:

effectively and sensitively with a flexible approach. To give patients details of their condition, its management and plans of treatment. This may involve explaining the nature of, chronic or disabling conditions and possible poor outcome and response to treatment, and will need to take into consideration emotional, physical and psychological conditions

to gain consent from patients, including those who may have communication problems e.g. English as a second language, hearing loss, other medical conditions which affect communication.

Experience

Essential

• To have experience of working as an undergraduate /post graduate within the last nine months.
• Variety of experience as an under-graduate across a range of settings with a wide range of patients with differing needs (i.e. intermediate care, community).
• Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary and/or physiotherapy team.
• Experience of organising and prioritising own workload and delegation of responsibilities as appropriate.

Desirable

• To have experience of working as a postgraduate in an NHS healthcare setting.
• Experience of working in Neurology.

Qualifications

Essential

• Diploma/Degree in Physiotherapy
• Health and Care Professions Council registered

Desirable

• ECDL

Skills and Knowledge

• Understanding of quality issues.

• Knowledge of a range of approaches to the physiotherapy management of a variety of disorders.
• Evidence of clinical reasoning skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
• Effective communication skills with patients, healthcare professionals and other agencies.
• Good organisational, planning and time management skills
• IT literate
• Basic Resuscitation skills

Desirable

• Evidence of involvement in relevant clinical audit.
• Ability to participate in the education of other healthcare professionals including students.
• Ability to pass on skills/knowledge to others within both formal and informal environments.
