Job summary

Working within the integrated care teams, the podiatry service plays a keep role in maintaining foot health and keeping people mobile. As a podiatrist within the team, you will be responsible for ensuring excellent patient care to improve foot health and prevent risks. Providing holistic assessments, you will look at the patient, as a whole, directing them to other services to include nursing, the falls team, social care and safeguarding. As part of the foot protection team, you will follow NICE guidance to ensure effective care and referrals of those with diabetes. The service has a well-established multi-disciplinary diabetes foot clinic to include vascular and orthopaedic consultants, a diabetologist, microbiologists, radiologists and plaster technicians. Having excellent links with vascular consultants in place already, the team is looking to improve the community vascular service. The team are involved in the Northwest Clinical effectiveness groups and encourage shared learning, reflective practice and continual professional development.

Multi chaired clinics allow support from a small friendly team and the post offers preceptorship for those who are newly qualified. Part time / job share available.

Main duties of the job

The role will mainly involve podiatric treatment of those with high clinical or podiatric need and the completion of annual Diabetes foot screening.

Full holistic patient assessment is required ensuring liaison with other specialities and joint / shared working where appropriate.

To provide effective patient education to reduce risks and improve foot health.

To undertake nail surgery and biomechanical assessments, provide offloading and simple insoles.

Working mainly in a multi chair clinic in a small friendly team, support will be on hand. Clinical supervision is offered and the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge from a highly skilled team is encouraged.

The team has very close links with other services including vascular and orthopaedic consultants, Tissue viability and District nurses and communication and shared working is encouraged.

Job Purpose:

Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical

To be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of podiatric care to patients with a variety of medical and podiatric problems.

To deliver specific foot care education and advice to patients, relatives and carers.

To carry out annual Diabetes assessments in all clinics. This will involve:

Use of foot assessment form

Detailed foot assessment using appropriate diagnostic equipment

Identification of risk factors, categorising patients into specific risk bands following assessment findings.

Referral to other services if required e.g. further vascular assessment, District Nursing, GP.

Provision of specific foot care advice in order to prevent deterioration / maintain / improve foot health.

To refer on to other health care professionals when appropriate through agreed pathways, e.g. referrals to podiatry assistant, hospital diabetes foot clinic, biomechanics service.

To carry out nail surgery procedures.

To have the capability to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation including the drawing up and administration of adrenalin for anaphylactic shock, if required.

To participate in the departmental rota for biomechanics, hospital clinics.

To carry out baseline biomechanical assessments.

To manufacture and fit chair side appliances e.g. insoles and silicone devices.

To follow departmental and Trust policies. To assist in the development and implementation of procedures and guidelines. To follow clinical guidelines but have the discretion to make own clinical diagnosis and decisions within professional boundaries where appropriate.

To be responsible for the maintenance, rotation and ordering of clinical stock.

To carry out clerical duties when necessary.

Professional Development:

To maintain Registration with Health Professional Council (HPC)

To work with the HCPC Code of Conduct, Trust policies and procedures, and adhere to the Patients Charter.

Actively participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to develop new skills and maintain and update existing skills.

To participate in Individual Performance Reviews with the Podiatry Manager.

To rotate into specialist areas within the department e.g. biomechanics clinics, working under supervision.

Communication:

To provide and ensure understanding of appropriate health education and clinical information to patients and carers.

To liaise effectively with colleagues, other Health Care Professionals and patients, in order to optimise patient care and promote the reputation of the department. This may involve: requesting, receiving and sharing diagnostic tests and results, clinical reports/letters, clinical arrangements, onward referral and professional advice.

To maintain accurate treatment records (paper and/or electronic) of all patient consultations and related work carried out at each clinical session.

Provide statistical information as required, e.g. Contact figures/DNA rates.

To attend and actively contribute to departmental meetings.

To ensure that all information relating to clients and staff gained through employment is kept confidential.

Research and Development/Audit

To participate in audit, data collection, analysis of data and development of outcomes.

To keep updated with relevant evidence-based research.

To participate in the Departments Clinical Governance initiatives, the development of local policies and implementation of local and national guidelines.
