Job responsibilities
To develop and
deliver a Highly specialised service for children from birth to 19 years with a
diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder- working within NICE
guidelines - through assessment, planning and implementation of packages of
care. This will involve developing and maintaining a high clinical profile and
presence and acting as a role model for other CSU staff.
To develop care
pathways with the specialist nurse team leader, the family, school and multi
disciplinary team to ensure consistent approach to care.
To support
parents/carers as they care for their children at home
To support the
specialist nursing team in authorised activity working to professionally
accepted standards, recognising the equality and diversity of the group.
To signpost
families to health, local authority services and voluntary services being aware
of standards of care provided by those organisations
To support
families through transition processes from pre-school to education, primary to
secondary school and secondary to adult services
To disseminate
expertise within both the clinical and education settings.
To undertake
research and lead audit in own specialist area.
To provide
specialist training to other professionals and other agencies as appropriate.
To be a
supplementary prescriber of medications for ADHD having undertaken appropriate
training and to work with the Independent prescriber to an agreed Clinical
Management Plan.
Principle Responsibilities:
Clinical
To make contact with the family following diagnosis.
To inform child and family about the diagnosis and services
available and the specialist nurse role.
To
provide advice and information to parents/carers on attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder and associated problems.

complex information appropriately with referrers and other To invoed agencies regarding
assessment and ongoing treatment.

To autonomously make clinical decisions about
behaviour management treatment based on detailed assessment.
To work closely with the Consultant Paediatricians
and as part of a highly specialised team of professionals with children with
additional needs.
To assist in the diagnosis of complex cases by
providing consultant with information from observations and discussion.
To record progress on care pathway and maintain up to date written
records in line with professional and CSU requirements.
Utilise highly
developed communication skills and interpersonal skills in engaging all members
of the family in the assessment process. Act as their advocate when their needs
are not being met.
To develop and
manage own Nurse-led ADHD clinics. To monitor and review progress in accordance
with NICE guidelines, local policies or individuals clinical condition
including monitoring Childs blood pressure, heart rate, growth, and behaviour
and to provide required information for Consultant Paediatrician in a timely
fashion.
In order to manage
a very unpredictable caseload offer home based / phone expert advice to
families, being available to respond to families needs as they arise.
To deliver specialist nurse services in a variety of community settings
i.e. childs own home, Child Development Centre, attending consultant and other
professional appointments where appropriate.
To liaise
with and educate clients, carers, and other health/local authority colleagues
about ADHD including linking with
relevant support groups.
To develop and maintain an information pack on services available in
liaison with other professionals.
To promote a culture of evidence based practice by
contribution to developing and maintaining protocols, documentation, systems,
standards, policies and guidelines in line with the Clinical Governance
Framework.
To demonstrate enhanced nursing practice and act as a
role model in terms of own care delivery by acquiring knowledge and skills to
support a client based service supported by the multi-disciplinary team.
To develop champions within health visiting and school health to work
with children and families with lower levels of need and support them in their
practice
The post holder will maintain an awareness of and
act in accordance with the Area Child Protection Procedures and Guidelines for
Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults procedures
Communication
To be able to communicate diagnosis, be empathetic and handle difficult
and emotional situations appropriately.
To be able to communicate appropriately to gain consent to share
information.
To use highly developed communication skills to communicate effectively
with the child / young person to enable them to be part of the care planning
process.
Managerial
Maintaining contemporaneous and accurate records
observing the Data Protection Act 1988, maintaining confidentiality.
Maintaining a diary for the purpose of planning
work. Diaries may be requested to be
submitted for audit purposes.
Share responsibility for the management of the band

Reporting to and consulting with the Team Leader on
matters relevant to the provision of a qualitative service, which meet the Organisations
service objectives.
Attending staff meetings and ensuring that minutes
are read and signed, especially when attendance has not been possible.
Work collaboratively as a
member of the multi-disciplinary team, taking the lead role when appropriate
and participate in building team commitment, coherence and spirit.
Using and developing managerial skills, in relation
to assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care whether in relation
to an individual or a target group within the population.
Fulfilling Organisational guidance regarding time
scales for contact with clients.
Observe the complaints and disciplinary procedures
in accordance with Organisational policy
Report sickness
absence and return relevant forms to line manager.
To review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective
use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal, in line with
local guidelines.
To attend and participate in meetings relevant to staff grade and
clinical responsibility.
To contribute to the
overall aims of the service by developing the nursing staff and encouraging
self sufficiency and flexibility of working practices to provide the most
cost-effective and efficient working practices.
To contribute to Service Improvement / Business plan maintaining
awareness of cost effective use of resources.
Education and Training
To apply specialist skills and knowledge in order to establish
professional competence.
To plan and lead in
the implementation of specialist training programmes related to ADHD to
Parents, carers, colleagues and other agencies as appropriate.
To demonstrate ongoing personal development through participation in
internal and external development opportunities, recording reflections and
outcomes in a professional portfolio.
To participate constructively in the Performance
Review and Appraisal process, taking responsibility for life long learning.
To complete mandatory and statutory training in line with Organisational requirements.
Act as mentor/preceptor to new staff and
participate, where appropriate, in developing the skills and potential of
colleagues.
Continually update
and consolidate nursing knowledge in line with NMC statutory requirements,
maintaining professional and prescribing registration.
Participate in
clinical supervision /mentoring.
Research and Development
To commit to evidence based practice by keeping up to date with current
research, initiating and contributing to audits relevant to Specialist Nursing
within the Childrens service.
To assist with the review and development of the Specialist Nursing
Service.
