Job summary

Bridgewater`s 0-19 services in Halton is looking for an enthusiastic and self- motivated individual to work as a band 6 childhood immunisation community nurse in Halton`s immunisation team. This position is for 9 months and available as a secondment.

The successful candidate will have a passion for nursing excellence and patient safety. They will support the team leader in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of the immunisation programmes delivered to school aged children across Halton. This will include the Childhood flu, HPV, Men ACWY and Td/IPV immunisation programmes.

The successful candidate will work as a source of expertise; demonstrating advanced knowledge, skills and experience in the field of immunisations. They will support the delivery of immunisation training to the 0-19 workforce.

The successful candidate will have experience of vaccinating. Experience of working in a position of leading a team is desirable.

Main duties of the job

As a registered nurse, the post holder will support the delivery of a high-quality childhood immunisation programme, delivering large scale immunisation and vaccination programmes within community and educational settings.

The postholder will provide Immunisation Training and support to the school-aged immunisation workforce to ensure they meet desired competencies in their role.

The postholder will work as a source of expertise, be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge, skills and experience in the management of school-aged immunisations.

The postholder will work with the team leader and performance team to collate and analysis the immunisation data.

The postholder will ensure there is the correct skill mix is available at each vaccination session allocating staff on e-Roster.

The postholder will work alongside the team leader in planning and delivering strategies to maximise uptake of school-aged vaccinations.

The postholder will undertake appraisals of skill mix team members and personal progressing any disciplinary or capability issues when appropriate.

To be flexible in working hours in order to support initiatives which aim to reach immunisation key performance indicators

Actively promote the health of individuals and the community by participating in child and adult health promotion programmes and public health initiatives to improve immunisation uptake.

Ensure efficient and effective use of resources to minimise incurred expenditure eg mileage, telephone calls, use if stationary etc

To be aware of and report Safeguarding issues to safeguard and protect the health and wellbeing of children, young people and vulnerable adults working within safeguarding children policies and guidelines

Contribute to clinical audit, research and clinical governance

To assist in the monitoring, development and review of quality measures and key performance indicators.

To travel to and from educational establishments, community venues and children and young peoples homes, transporting essential equipment required for delivery of immunisations

Observe the complaints and disciplinary procedures in accordance with the Trust policy.

Report sickness absence and return relevant forms to line manager.

To autonomously facilitate the delivery of immunisation training programmes.

To contribute to the development of training programmes and packages as appropriate.

To support management team in the presentation of data at contract meetings and provide immunisation reports to NHSE

Clinical

Maintain active status on NMC register acting in accordance with the professional code and guiding documents in adherence with Revalidation Framework.

Be aware of current working practices in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

Lead in the organisation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of immunisation and vaccination programmes to school age children including ordering and delivery of supplies and equipment, storage of vaccines and waste disposal, delegating duties as appropriate.

Ensure correct ordering, storage and handling of vaccines procedures are followed.

Identify and plan uptake immunisations for those with incomplete immunisations opportunistically and on referral from the wider children and young people workforce.

Screen clients to ensure their inclusion for immunisation meets the required criteria in the Patient Group Direction (PGD).

Obtain informed consent and act on clinical judgements formed from complex information.

Prepare and administer the vaccine safely and competently in accordance with local/national standards, guidelines and policies.

Respond to clinical emergencies (anaphylaxis ) initiating basic life support ensuring emergency procedures are carried out and reported in accordance with local/national standards, guidelines and policies.

To be named / link nurse for immunisations within specific educational establishments.

Supervise children and young people during immunisation sessions.

Report any adverse reactions in accordance with the yellow card reporting system

Undertake opportunistic and domiciliary immunisations, following up non immunised children; providing information, advice and updating data as required.

Ensure any vaccination given is recorded as per local guidelines/policy

Assess and signpost children and young people to the appropriate named SCPHN where additional advice and support is indicated for identified health needs.

Liaises and advises teachers and parents of the health needs of children and young people following vaccination.

To adapt practice to meet individual circumstances with due regard for cultural, social and linguistic differences.

Leadership:

Provide supervision, where appropriate to support the skill mix team.

Undertake appropriate delegation within team.

Lead and develop implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines relevant to own area of work. Provide advice where services are developing.

Manage own time effectively to ensure prioritisation of workload in order to achieve agreed deadlines and service is covered.

Initiate incident reporting and take appropriate action following Bridgewater policies.

Submit statistical returns and compile reports as necessary.
