An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Bridgewater NHS Community Foundation Trust as the Clinical Director for dental services in Cheshire and Merseyside

Our team works in partnership with local hospitals to provide excellent complex care and treatment to children and adults needing care and treatment under general anaesthetic.

Main duties of the job

. Lead a specialist team of dentists across 7 clinics in Cheshire and Merseyside.

Under the guidance and direction of the Clinical Lead be responsible for clinical performance, quality and safety throughout the region.

Work in partnership with Head of Service to ensure all staff provide a service which is efficient and effective at all times,

Oversee and contribute to regular network meetings for dentists, providing clinical appraisal, mentorship and training as appropriate.

Representing the Trust internally and externally.

Cascading of all clinical information as appropriate.

Job Purpose:

Except in emergencies or where otherwise agreed with your manager, you are responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities set out in your Job Plan, which will be reviewed annually.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Liaise and work with the Lead Clinical Director for Dental Services to ensure clinical quality and clinical delivery are maintained and improved across the service

Liaise and work with the Heads of Dental Services to ensure an effective, safe service is delivered to the Trusts patients.

Work clinically in your area of specialism and with general community dental services patients, demonstrating your professionalism and leadership skills to your team. Support all your team members in the delivery of excellent clinical care for patients.

The emphasis for this post is based on Management and Leadership competencies

Management & Leadership

Provide managerial and clinical leadership to services operating across multiple sites, with several staff groups and providing a varied portfolio of differing clinical services.

Undertake appraisals, personal development plans and job plans for clinical and non-clinical staff. (Using both the SPCDS and the My Space processes)

Provide advice about:

  • The legislative framework (For example in relation to GDC Standards) to support on such matters to other members of the dental team.
  • Specialist registration and the provision of specialist and specialised care.

Work with:

  • Finance business partner to undertake budget setting and budget management.
  • HR business partner to undertake effective and efficient recruitment.
  • Other corporate support services in Bridgewater, for example in dealing with complaints and incidents.

Manage:

  • Clinical performance, including the quality of care.
  • The clinical service, including horizon scanning.
  • External relationships with senior managerial and clinical colleagues, including Operational Managers in Bridgewater and Commissioning Teams.

Provide support and direct input to:

  • Dental Clinical Governance meetings including audit and radiation protection updates.
  • Finance, Workforce and Planning meetings.
  • Team meetings
  • Any other such groups that may be established in Bridgewater.

Clinical

This will include:

  • Examination assessment and treatment of special care and paediatric patients whether referred to the service or retained for long term care. This will include patients with complex medical co-morbidities and complex patient management issues.

  • Provide care under sedation and GA and in domiciliary settings.

  • Provide up to date and evidence-based restorative, periodontal, prosthodontic, and simple minor oral surgery procedures for the above patient groups.

  • Implement programmes to prevent disease and promote health in these patients

  • Delegate work appropriately and efficiently to DCP colleagues (Dental Nurses, Hygienists and Therapists) such that the efficiency of the clinic is maximised.

  • Identify commonly occurring medical emergencies and lead the dental team in the appropriate first line management of the emergency, using appropriate techniques equipment and drugs.

  • Be responsible for organising training and resources in support of the availability of sedation in all or part of the sector.

  • Undertake appropriate assessment of patients to determine the need for specialist referral or advice.

Communication

Communicate effectively with the following.

  • Patients, carers, user groups and families regarding complex clinical issues and/or in difficult situations.
  • Clinical teams and peers in relation to clinical and/or leadership situations.
  • Other health and social care professionals relating to oral health and oral health care.
  • Operational managers and corporate services in Bridgewater.

Professionalism

Provide advice and/or support to colleagues or managers on ethical issues including interpretation of GDC guidance e.g., Maintaining Standards and CPD.

Actively participate in and manage others in relation to appraisal, peer review, clinical audit and continuing professional development activities; lead peer review, clinical audit or CPD activities.

Support the Trusts Medical Director(s) to deal with issues of poor or under-performance in colleagues and other members of the dental team.

Teaching and Training

Organise clinical teaching and supervision programs for undergraduates, post-graduates in training programs, or for dentists in supervision.

Arrange for the dental epidemiology programs to be undertaken including the calibration of examiners and the submission of cleaned data.

Participate in clinical research under the direction of approved and registered research lead and take the lead in clinical research projects falling within your competencies.
