We have an exciting opportunity to join Bridgwater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust within our Community Dental Service Network as Deputy Head of Dental Services for the Greater Manchester area of our dental network.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced leader who is interested in a role to support the Head of Dental Services (Greater Manchester) in a role that involves service improvement, innovation, operational delivery, partnership working and people management. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and support the Dental Service within Greater Manchester.

You will work directly with the Head of Dental Service (Greater Manchester) to support and drive change and transformation to deliver high quality care to our patients. We look to develop our services working in partnership with colleagues from across the organisation

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Head of Dental Service (GM) is a highly visible, hands-on, and available leader, acting as a role model and resource to ensure the sustained delivery of high standards of governance and service delivery, to clinicians, patients, and the public.

The postholder will lead, manage, and deliver the objectives of the Head of Dental Service (GM) portfolio in line with the Trusts strategy and business plan. They will lead on multiple projects and provide strong leadership on behalf of the Head of Dental Service. They will be responsible for developing, managing, and delivering multiple work streams within demanding timeframes and budget.

They will be a key contact for managerial and support staff across GM and will ensure effective communication in respect of the Head of Dental Service (GM) areas of responsibility.

They will ensure that effective processes and monitoring are in place for appraisals. They will support the management of any performance/governance concerns among dental staff, working with Human Resources and Dental Leadership Team. They will monitor complaints and ensure that they are appropriately managed and responded to.

Work closely with the Clinical Managers/Dental Nurse team Managers & Head of Dental Service (GM) to ensure there are high quality governance arrangements in place for the GM sector including producing monthly reports/monitoring spreadsheet for the Finance, Workforce and Performance Group.

Planning:

To lead and be responsible for obtaining and analysing highly complex or contentious information to produce business cases, business models and detailed project plans for the development of services and quality and to project manage those opportunities accordingly.

Design and implement plans for the Trust that consider strategic Trust objectives and short-term, medium-term, and long-term priorities and challenges.

Work with the Head of Dental Service (GM) to design and implement workforce plans particularly in recruitment of clinicians, and support staff.

Contribute creative solutions to the recruitment and retention of Dentists, Dental Nurses, administrative and support staff.

Take responsibility for day-to-day direction of the work of the Greater Manchester Dental team and work streams to meet agreed objectives, targets and deadlines as documented in the work programme.

Service Development:

Lead on the development of Standard Operating Procedures/ Business processes and Memoranda of Understanding, ensuring timely reviews and ongoing compliance in accordance with the terms of the contract. Lead on organisational change as required by the needs of the service.

Support the dentists and dental nurses as appropriate, in ensuring staff within the network meet the requirements of good clinical and operational governance with accurate understanding and reference to the Trusts Policies.

Strategy and Policy:

Remain up to date with national agendas relevant to the Dental Team and help translate them into local plans.

Participate in development of corporate policies and strategies and interpretation of Trusts Vision and translate into action plans.

Ensure that guidance from external organisations, e.g. General Dental Council, Care Quality Commission etc; is embedded in our operational practice.

Leadership and Management of Staff:

  • Ensure a regular physical presence across the Greater Manchester Sector to provide appropriate leadership/support.

Lead to ensure performance review and feedback systems are implemented/in place for GM sector, including annual PDRs.

Ensure staff training and development takes place.

Ensure the recruitment and retention of staff with the required competences to meet service requirements.

Responsibility for Financial & Physical Resources:

Supporting the Head of Dental Service (GM) with budget management and controls, working closely with the Trusts Finance team. Making recommendations to senior management as required.

Monitor budgets for the GM Sector, including responsibility for ensuring compliance with budget limits.

Responsible for managing the directorate within allocated resources.

Act as authorised signatory for project equipment and materials to support the directorate.

Communication:

To maintain effective, constructive, and appropriate communications on behalf of the Head of Dental Service (GM) with a broad range of stakeholders. This post must make an impressive and efficient impact in terms of external and internal relationships both within the Trust and other regional and national organisations.

Provide and receive complex, confidential, and sensitive information on behalf of the Head of Dental Service (GM).
